Post Tropheus sp. "ikola"
Hey guys just wondering what the going price for 4cmish juvies are for Tropheus sp. "ikola"
Would be looking at around 15 of them but just putting the feelers out to work out how much it would cost.
And before I cop a comment from Damo yes I have used the search function and searched some other forums but
I cant seem to find a solid up to date price.

Cheers

Hey mate, would love to get some ikolas as well. And was looking around for some. There are some breeders who sell for $20, but there stock are usually sold before they are born. The rest sell for around the $30 I found. Hopefully a breeder will reveal themself!

Depends on which Ikolas you want, but I used to sell my fry for around the $30-40 mark, but that was 2 years ago aswell.

Grum.

You do realise the difference between the two different Ikola's dont you?

There is the Kaiser (Ikola) which has a long yellow bar that doesn't penetrate the fins, and then there is the Kaiser II (Ikola) or Kiriza, which is a shorter bar and does penetrate the fins.

The reason im pointing this out is I used to have a large colony of K2's and noticed alot get sold without the clarification, and would hate the see the strains get mixed. (And it does happen as people sell off the males).

Plus I think the K2's have a much more vibrant yellow.

Also there is a guy who advertises on ACE forums, for his mate (who doesnt own a computer) and lives out the back of Jacobs Creak, This was a few years ago but I brought some youngins off him for a very good price, and they where very high qaulity. He had about 10 different breeding variants aswell. Might be worth a shot to search on ACE. From memory all I got was a mobile phone number :S

HTH.

Grum.

Not a very good photo, but this was one of mine at about 5-6cm, so thats the sorts colour and qaulity you should be looking for, take your time, its worth it in the long run.

Thanks for that grum that does help alot.

From the research I've done and from what i can gather there is Tropheus sp. "Ikola" and Tropheus sp. "Black" Kiriza which is also known as Kaiser II.
I'll def give ACE forums a go too i quite like the K2's as you said the yellow is much more vibrant. Decided I'll probably save some more money and do a
colony of about 20.

Cheers

Well there is some confusion in Aussie anyway from what ive seen, But you are right, as long as you know the difference, then its easy to check them when purchasing.

But yea a colony of 20 is the minimum I would start with, as depending on your luck, you might get 50/50 male and female, and could go either way, worst case you get 6-8 females and 2-3 males at the end, and that's probably the smallest colony you want. Ill keep my fingers crossed for you that you get 17 females and 3 awesome males :)

Funny, when I sold everything up I couldn't give mine away, I had them advertised for weeks (and sold a breeding colony, 70 fry in the tank to prove it, of 22 adults for $40 each, all 12-13cm, and from memory the Dub's sold for $20 each same size), and my K2 fry sat in Aquariums Alive for a few months. It sorta has seasons, but they would be one of the fish that you can make a profit out of if you invest in them at the early stages.

Grum.

Ok so i thought I'd update on wat I've been up to since all the feedback 8)
I had a bit of a search around on other forums and pm'd Ned, and to my surprise Ned has Ikola juvies coming up soon!
So in 4 weeks time I'll be taking delivery of around 29 F1 Tropheus sp "Ikola" juvies! Which means now I'm in the process
of having the tanks ready and all scaped out (coincidently two big piles of black river stones will be in the tank grum :ewink: )
So yea can't wait to have my new fishies :fish:

Cheers
