Post Asian Arowana's in Aus?
Hey all, pretty new to all this, but am looking at an Aro for a 6x2x2. Been researching, but can't seem to find Red or Golden Aro's available in Australia? Are they illegal to import. Are there any Australian breeders? If yes, whats the $$?

Cheers all, Wellsey.

you can find them quite easily in sydney area but they are all smuggled in as far as i know. they are an illegal import. price is generally around $3000 for a 6-8 inch fish(dont quote me on that as this will change depending on quality and type)

There all illegal. And due to the difficulties in breeding them there is a 99.9% chance that they are imported recently illegally. Also if you run a scanner over them you will most likely find they are microchipped, which imo is a pretty stupid fish to have because a scanner can track the exact fish farm in asia they came from.

The Asian Arowana's are illegal to import, but LEGAL to keep, considering that you've already had it and that there's no proof of you importing them yourself.

Yes they do come micro chipped and come with a Certificate notifying where it came from, and what farm it was raised in.

As far as I've seen them go around for in QLD
Arowana's that I've seen for sale:

Green arowana: 8-10inches approx $2000-3000
RTG: 12inch approx $4000-5000
Chilli Red Arowana: 9inches approx $6000

But I've seen some RTG's go for cheaper (around $2000) for people that are moving house's or just don't have time to keep them anymore.

Steve

This is what I've seen for sale, not what the average going rate for them is. :ewink:

Hey guys, I'm not entirely sure of the ins and outs of the law in terms of owning illegal to import fish, but just a thought. If the fish is chipped, who ever can trace it's point of origin by it's micro chip and can there for prove it was a smuggled fish. Wouldn't that mean that the responsible government agency can confiscate the fish and destroy it?

Briztoon we meet again :) Will have to meet up one day :)

The following website http://www.environment.gov.au/biodivers ... index.html will start you on the track.

Basically if a fish is illegally imported it is always illegal, also the offspring I beleive. The burden of proof has recently been changed where YOU must PROVE the animal was legally imported. Which unless it is on the import list is extremely difficult.

The raids in Sydney recently used the microchips to prove illegality of the arowanas.

It used to crack me up people being so proud of their fish being chipped and it being used as a selling point :)

As a side note one of the reasons I am so hot about such topics is the obvious sale and publicity of illegal fish hurts our hobby and is used against us to enact legislation to prevent us from keeping many spp of fish.
Also my background is in international wildlife trades issues :)
