Post Sumping 2 1000ltr drums
G'day everyone :)

I have 2 1000ltr drums just sitting there and I would like sump thum both. I have a tank that was 1500x70x45 that lost one side :( so I was gonna cut it in half and make a sump that would be 750x700x450(LHW) I am of two minds about this as that would be a sweet little display tank :perplex:
Would this be a big enough sump for 2,000ltrs? And I know that you should aim to turn your water over about 4 times an hour(or more). But is this needed with such a large volume of water? Would a 5000 or 6000lph pump be enough?
Also I just cut the weir.....how the hell do you spell it...my brain is broke :gurn: out of my 4'x2.5'x2' and pot in a 32mm bulkhead and SS strainer. I have a 3600lph pump in that sump and the water can't drain fast enough :whyme: :whyme: :lafhard: . So what should I put on the drums? 2x32mm SS strainers on each or one REALLY BIG ONE?
I would love any advice :P :P
Cheers
Jono

1st off the quantity of outlets makes little difference compared to the size of pipe they are connected to!
Go 2x strainers with 50mm pvc pipe and you will be more than sweet!

2. Sumps are generally used for biological filtration, so a massive waterflow through a sump is useless. The bacteria will be unable to process the waste at full capacity if flow is too high! Just pack the sump full of Matrix, purigen and whatever else fits in with the fish you will keep. I would say a 3500 L/hr pump would be sufficient.

3. sump size depends on what you are keeping. If heavily stocked and sump was full of media it would be barely sufficent.
All depends on your set-up and fish stocking.

Steve

Thanks Steve I was wondering about the flow rate through the sump. I don't like over stocking tanks so that won't be an issue and I don't even know what I am gonna put in them. Maybe just some live bearers untill I need it for something else.
I am running a 3600lph pump in a 2' sump with 3L of matrix, some aqua clay and purigen. Am I putting to much flow for the bacteria to do its job?
Thanks for the advice steve :egrin:
Please keep it coming everyone
cheers

The sump would be about 230L and packed with matrix ;)

jonno mate as long as the sump can handle the amount of water that will flow into if the power is off you should be fine

you have seen my one in the garage and im running a 3500lph pump on it and its fine though i did just put a larger sump on it for the power outages and stop the mess when it did go out

personally i think you will want a 5-6000 lph pump to have both tanks turning over the water enuff
