I know I keep harping on it this kind of spotting also occurs in tanks with heavier than usual nitrates. Can you tell us what your water change regime is. And have you tested for anything other than ph. Can you also tell me a kh reading?

for the year that i have had the fish i have done the same thing week in week out

chlorine neutralizer
anywhere from 50% to 80% water change weekly ( our tap water is almost bang on ph8 )
tetra colour tropical granules ( morning and night )
every 2 mths give the filter media a squeeze in a bucket of tank water.

Ok ph is fine big thing to check on though is kh it completely controls your ph. I was the worst at checking anything but ph until I learnt more on the different affects of all water parameters.
Definately vary their diet more I have had yellows show lots of black when over fed on tetra bits. Any of the four brands will help(sera, prestige, hikari or spectrum). Always mix up the brands for better results. check out the tropheus thread in general explains more there.

I know what you chaps are talking about....but the title of this thread refers to Apistos.....certainly not a fish you would keep in a ph of 8!!!

Remember less experienced people may read this and confuse the comments!

Back to the apisto's I think Rod might have something with the katapang, it is thought to have a natural form of antibiotic or medicinal values.
What softening agents are you using gingerbeer?
