Dawn tetra (  aphyocharax nattereri) and  Corydoras hastatus!!!
Maybe even ember tetra if you want some red. Galaxy rasbora and pencil fish if you want fancy.....  spotted blue eyes and rednose shrimp could be a nice native option.

Thanks Johnbetta, and Hello to you as well. I'm new to the small tank world and always happy to take on board advice from the more experienced. The nano micro environment is really new to me, so is a single species 'display' tank. Looking forward to improving my aquaculture skills!

Picture isn't clear enough to diagnose anything really. Phone aquarium shops close to you in Brisbane and see if one can diagnose for you using a microscope. Neilsens Marine Mates - Smiths Aquarium - Exotic Fish Connections - to name a few.

    Not so useful if frozen.
Its true, as none alluded, that I am prone to rushing in with a heavy hand in these situations. I can only justify by saying I have suffered terrible terrible damage to livestock from bacterials and am loath to suffer them again.
Making a solid ID of the nasty is first step to choosing right med and reducing any colateral damage from its use.
I would say we havent done that yet....
Even so. I would still treat this as a tank wide situation and not just focus on fish showing symptoms. Often it will be too late for them. Brutal yes but honest.
I dont think any of us here are vets..... but if we are.....  thoughts?

Hey guys and gals was told about this forum from my aquaholics sponcer and supplier of all things required to drain my bank account . I had a break from the aquarium world for about 8 years and have just decided to get back into it . I figure after 8 years of saving I can afford it now. I have a 4x2x28" and a 12x28"x28" and Africans are life. Cheers

He looked a little different to this, kind of like a stingray with a long skinny tail, he was dark with white and spikes kind of on he's face. Really really cute too.

Perhaps a longfin bristlenose? Or maybe a juvenile pleco of some type.

Looking at the plants, there are 2 that are not true aquatic, aluminum plant and purple waffle. The bacopa is quite hard too when tank isnt setup specially for plants.

All that aside, glad to see you joined up. We got a great group of aquarists here. Keep us in the loop and we wont let you fail!
Shrimp are ok if enough plants for them to evade the betta. You really want to start with a good amount though so they can be sustainably harvested by betta lol.

it sounds like a bristle nose catfish or a peppermint bristlenose catfish they go well with the betta and can keep a few in a tank

Going off the bloody mess, its looking bacterial. Any chance of snipping gill scale and checking colour of gills? I know its a tiny fish, but if they are a healthy red/pink then I am barking up the wrong tree.

This time of year tho, 90% of issues tend to be columnaris style external bacterial infections. They are 'waking up' with the slightly warmer weather. Just as the first cold snap heralds a thousand 'my fish has whitespot' phonecalls.....  so does the first warm weather herald heaps of finrot and faded body patch cases.

No guppy is worth more than $5, until someone tries to buy YOUR best male and then you are all like, "woah man! that ones like special or something."

Well I feed discus heavy as they just always look skinny....  and the bigger the tank the more dilution. Even tho 2ft cube is a lot of water, more is better as = more time between changes.....  unless you add more fish.

I have had discus in 2ft cubes and it was fine. Too much effort for me tho. Way less maintence keeping almost anything else. I'd go planted with dwarf cichlids. Or if you want big blocks of colour try gourami?

Dedicated guppy breeders separate fry by sexes long before they become sexually mature. How else could you develop a strain of new purchases with confidence otherwise?
How they sex 1cm sized fish is fascinating and a joy to watch the speed/experience / volume of sorters. It's all manually done. 8 hour days. Several fish per second & out of water.
I've seen fish farms destroy entire vats  (8000 + fish) because a male has managed to jump in somehow.

My big tiger girls would be 3 years old now and have started to die. All from same batch so to be expected......  but always makes me do a double take.

Could just be older girls , some of my tiger endler girls have a fair size on them and they are the breeders.  Buy a couple of young ones and with good quality food they will be huge in a few months

    A $100 ea guppy is often a $5 guppy within 12 months.

As in what happened to Moscow blacks over last few years.
Another thing to keep in mind, expensive guppys are often very delicate. So best for experienced gamblers.

I am with the others, small fish would be fine or shrimp for that matter but i wouldn't get anything that would grow more than 3-4 cm long
