  1. If you want to, you could try one of those clip on lights that would clip onto the bowl. With the light close enough, it would probably heat the water enough. I'm not sure on prices, and just be careful to concentrate all the light on the water, but its a possibility.
  2. For a 5m tank, doesn't 2.5ft x 2.5ft, l x h, seem a little conservative?

  4. Hey everyone, Thanks for all the info. The googling I did revealed some of those pages, but it wasn't directly aimed at what I was hoping for. I guess I'll just need to do a little bit more reading. Haha, I find it more an interesting way to view behaviour in the fish's natural surroundings. Well, I find that more enjoyable than other scenarios. Once again, thanks all for the help.
  5. Hey, I'm currently doing some research for some tank ideas. I was wondering if there were any particularly good sources for finding information on biotopes, specifically what fish are in the region, natural landscapes. I've done a fair bit of googling, but I haven't been able to find anything definitive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it helps, I'm looking at American biotopes, and at the moment, the Rio Xingu region in Brazil. Thanks, Raff.
  6. Sorry to hear this. Another thing could be that, if you removed all your gravel, it would have released all the trapped gases, which would have spiked ammonia and nitrites. Just a thought. Again, sorry to hear this.
  7. The colouration in that female leuco is awesome. Nice pictures.

  10. Thanks for your help and info rex, I'll start doing some testing soon.
  11. Will do, but I'm getting a reading of 8.2+ pH so thats where my thinking of something leeching in came from. Thanks.
  12. I do have a tiled roof. I think my next step will be to take a sample to test straight from the tank to eliminate the pipe work. I never thought about that rex, thanks for the info.
  13. It's a poly tank, and the water is pumped through normal irrigation piping. That's all I can really tell you. I was under the suspicion that something was leeching as well, but I really have no experience with this, so I have no clue. Thanks for the heads up too Japes, might have to do a little research about water quality when I get a chance. Sorry to bump an old thread but I wanted to ask another question building off this. I was thinking about my water problem today (rainwater comes out of the tank at 8.2-8.4 pH). I realised that the pipe work to carry the water to the tap was buried in the ground and concreted over the top. Now, it looks like the people who did the concreting didn't do a very good job. So, if the pipe carrying the rainwater from the tank was punctured and the water was running over concrete, would that be a possible place where something is leeching into the water? Would this scenario raise the pH of the water? Thanks.

  21. I'd like to add to this. I don't have KH or GH readings, but last time I tested the rain water here at my place, the pH was 8.2-8.4. My understanding was that rainwater should be soft/acidic? Any thoughts?
  22. http://aqadvisor.com/ Try this site out. I'm going to say that this type of tool should only be used as a rough estimate/guideline. Please Please Please don't think stocking a tank is a simple as pumping a few numbers into a formula. There is no way to replace people's experiences. Also, you should post your tank dimensions, filtration etc, and what types of fish you were thinking of keeping, and some members will be able to help you out. Welcome to the forum.
  23. That's incredible. Not only that it survived for that long, but that it was also able to breed! Did you do anything special for it in the display tank to keep it alive?
  24. The marbled oto looks awesome.
