Looking far forward,  what are the goals of this forum? Is there one person or a group of persons who know? Because if you don't know where you want to be, its impossible to know how to get there or when you arrive.
I don't think aquarium sponsors get a good deal. So many professional but un registered back yard breeders, fish on- sellers and un sponsored shops and business owners selling publicly and less publicly but not very privately. A simple fix would be to get non aquarium sponsorship or remove all sponsors and charge subscriptions for forum access. (Or for trader section access).
An over whelming majority of posts are "want to buy". Or "want to sell". Or " I need some urgent help".  If this is good for the forum then no changes are needed. However i suspect a lot of fish keepers come here to learn, share and help others to enjoy the hobby they love. Why are there so few old veteran fish keepers on the forum? Why don't the ones left post anymore?
How many active members are there? Assuming one post in last 3 months is active?
Don't try to copy or keep up with facebook. Whats the point of duplication?  Why can we LIKE posts but not un-like? Why cant QLDAF accounts get deleted?  Whats the point of a post count? I dont think layout has much to do with anything. Like everything online, the real problem is information overload or mis information overload. Someone with a small amount of information thinking they know everything without any accountability is a real danger.

    1) Turn off all air and water pumps to get a still surface.
    2) Absorbent hand paper towel or newspaper laid flat over the water to absorb the oil.
    3) Then slide/whisk off into a large ice cream container.
Repeat until all the oil is gone.

If the oil scum is really thick, use the ice cream container to surface skim the majority off initially

I modified a smoke alarm with a speaker wire hung to your fill line. When tank is  full, water completes the battery circuit and the alarm goes off. The smoke alarm will still work as a smoke alarm.
Very simple mod. Google will have instructions no doubt.
Or if you have a big tank, use a dedicated drain line to waste and drill an overflow hole on sump. The drainline can run above the floor but below floor is neater. If you can't get a wide drain line,  use a bell siphon that auto starts when water is too high and auto stops when low. Siphon having more throughout than a gravity drain. Again google aquaponic for bell siphons.
    Or give me a call/email.

aquaholic99 got a reaction from Jaymes in Air blower recomendations
You can buy piston (linear) air pumps, diaphram air pumps or blowers.
The piston air pumps and blowers are the most noisy and can get hot since they have metal moving parts. Generally speaking they have higher air pressure and can pump air down deeper into the water with the blower having high volume and high pressure. Electrical running costs also higher. Some linear piston pumps need to be oiled.
Piston air pump looks like this
    Blower looks like this
I would use a diaphram air pump which is high volume, lower pressure as they are cheaper to run and quiet. All the bigger ones will give many years of reliable service without blowing diaphrams if you don't restrict air flow and create back pressure. There are lots of ways to do this. Google and other threads on this forum will help. Also quite a few brands, some sold as septic tank agitators, some sold for ponds.

Sounds like it is an algae film. These look very similar to an oil slick. It's just a process of elimination.

Sometimes increasing surface agitation (to dissolve) can visually remove surface film.

Good news. Very exciting. About 3 days to hatch and 3 days for wrigglers to start free swimming. Temperature depending.
Get your live food ready while you have time (now). Live baby brine shrimp is best but micro worm might be simpler.
You can keep a diary/journal of all your thoughts, timeline and events if you want to self improve.

You need to decide whether you want babies or watch the parents try to raise babies.
If you want babies, steal the eggs immediately and artificially hatch and raise the fry. You will need another tank, perhaps several as they will lay more.
if you want to watch the parents raise babies then you can help them by adding a foreground plant or turning the slate so you can't see the eggs - can you see how exposed and vunerable the parents must feel? They eat eggs to protect them. Tip - turn the slate into the back corner so you can see eggs in the double reflection of glass. Fish can only see out/through and won't see you looking in. Second tip is to tilt the slate so dirt can't fall on the eggs. That power filter would soon suck up and free swimming wrigglers anyway and needs to be removed.

When space is tight, I deliberately overhang tanks off the rack to improve the access into the tank and reduce the number/cost of PVC pipe fittings.
On 90 x 45 x 45 tanks with 6mm glass/base, I overhang the tank by 75mm regularly. Some old photos I have dug up below.

I would just get one species if your after a display, not a collection. Although the most common, the surinamensis have the best finnage/colour / behaviour IMO for what your doing.

aquaholic99 got a reaction from Rotarmaster in external infection on rivulatus
For a localised infection, i would net the fish out and smear/rub iodine gel directly on the area. Just avoid the gill area. Repeat weekly only if required.
You can also drip undiluted "fungus cure" medication (acriflavine) but keep head up so gravity runs medication away from gills. One or two drops right where its needed is better than dosing the whole tank.
Most infections are a result of poor tank conditions so look for the cause, don't just treat the symptoms.

Like most companies, the quality of work depends on the person building. Some companies only have one builder, others have several. And without mentioning any companies  by name, I've seen glass being cut and tanks made by work experience labour. People who possibly have not kept fish or understand which part of a build can affect a fish keeper significantly.
One way you can reduce this is to personally inspect the actual tank you will be getting before you buy or have it delivered.

I've collected red algae rocks in freshwater creeks as well. It's more of a flat lichen type algae but adds nice colour. Rounded river rocks look more natural and in place than angular rock.

As you are future planning for a fish tank, i would get a second powerpoint on separate circuit. So emergency equipment only can be kept on one circuit without getting tripped. Keep the commonly used aquarium equipment on the other circuit. Heaters, lights, timers, first filter,  stuff that isnt critical but do trip earth leakage breakers. A second circuit is very cheap to install.
Depending on size of tank, a water tap and floor drain.
The computerised controllers are all wi - fi now but the equipment still needs reliable power.
And if your planning the house from scratch, look at solar tubes for daytime  light as it's very hard to beat natural sun. Easy to control the intensity, the very best light spectrum and free.
