    General hardness

The snail shells would explain the reason for high hardness level. Bear in mind there are different minerals which together determine outcome of TOTAL hardness. In your case it sounds like shells are contributing to increasing calcium hardness and therefore raising total hardness. You said your fish are all doing well, so as mentioned many times before, concentrate more on stability in your water chemistry. Perhaps remove shells and clay s lo wl y over time if you're that keen to lower hardness level.

    Dying fish new tank

Still amazes me to this day that customers buying and setting up new tanks are not sold a basic ammonia/nitrite/nitrate test kit as a compulsory purchase with the tank....... Or even keeping any fish at all at any stage without one...... shit that doesnt make sense ,it makes me a bit angry when shit doesnt make any sense.... it's just dumb weird shit

simple handles for fishtank lids ?

You can buy plastic strips like the H mould u mentioned from bunnings. Its usually near the roller doors out in the timber section (its normally used for joining sheets of fibro sheeting or similar sheeting. Or you could simply drill a small hole in front lid to act as a handle. If you have lots of tanks, sliding lids are the go

    TDS Meter

I use a tds meter everyday at work. Trust me we have tried a lot of them, and the cheap ones are shit. This one is the most reliable that we have found and doesnt go out of calibration frequently. Hope whatever you require it for justifies the cost though....
  13. I am certainly no expert in fish medication, but if memory serves me correctly, white stringy poo = flagellates. Flagellates are i think a bacterial infection in the intestinal tract and the white stringy poo is actually the fishies stomach lining? Best course of action would be to isolate affected fish into a seperate tank, treat with metronidazole soaked into the food, and cross your fingers. Extremely contageous to other fish and important to suck up bottom of tank and white poo's regularly. I often didnt even bother attempting treatment and just dispatched affected fish quickly to stop spreading to others.

    Fry Savers

Years ago, i also have used dedicated tanks with plastic strainers lined up in rows that simply just float on the water surface......

    Fry Savers

You could try cutting some finer net to line the inside. I use these to raise peppermint fry outdoors with good success, and theyre pretty cheap too, plus i like to fiddle and experiment, they come in handy as media baskets for sumps as well ☺
