  1. As anyone knows quality fish food is ridiculously expensive 50 plus per kg. Very easy and cheap method it making your own is to buy a cheap grinder, mine came from Kmart for $35. Last night I done a 4kg batch of food they go nuts for for less than 12 per kg. I have been doing this for the last year without any issues, recipe always varies but always similar Get Zucchini Carrot Fish filets Garlic Prawn Marinara mix Salt And use some of your usual pellets to improve consistancy Food Grinder [ATTACH=CONFIG] From here it about half an hours work, the smaller you cut the meat up the quicker the grinder will work Befor you know it you have this Then product ready to freeze

  4. Sorry I have not been on much - Telstra has been fixing the problem for some time now....... I think our hobby has a problem. Our desire for cheap fish. Downwards pressure on price means the seller has to source fish cheaper to meet the demand. The end result is we get the bottom of the barrel fish. We do not get the best, we get at best the mediocre. I have heard people say that Asian fish are not good quality. However when I have been in Asia I have seen great fish. Maybe our desire for cheap means we do not get the quality fish sent here. If goes further to the commercial breeder. The breeder to make a dollar when downwards pressure is on may not be culling as he would desire. He needs to raise enough dollars to cover his cost of raising the fry. This may not affect the hobbyist, who is not as concerned about profit, but does those who depend on the $$$$$ There are places you can get quality at a great price, but do not expect it to be cheap! Remember you do get what you pay for!

  23. For those that do not rely on algae and there are many of you, this is for you! Lanthanum chloride results from use of my own and speaking to others that swears by it for their phosphate issues as well. This common form of salt that is used as a chemical binder that they use in the pool industry is sometimes labelled starver. It may also be part of the make up of phos buster,no one knows for sure. What it does is precipitates phosphate into an inert compound in the aquarium rendering the phosphate harmless in a very short time. From my playing with this in my tubs with all kinds of feeding regimes, life forms and extra polluting left over foods including results from two others that use it and the use of rowaphos etc, etc, this is what I have found. The use of starver is extremely affective and should be used via heavily diluting it in RO water and adding this liquid into a filter sock or behind a filter barrier slowly and in small doses so that it does bind with phosphate. This gentle approach should be used any way but more so if you have small gill plated fish in particular like the zebrasoma species of tangs being the worst for reacting to this via aquarium algae up taking the substance and they consume it creating a toxic build up in them and their possible reaction from their small gill functions, either way it needs to be used gently. If you use it to rapidly to remove the phos the sudden reduction of phos can put stress on clams coralline algae’s and basic algae. The more interesting aspect of this was the speed at which the cyano croaked that I had in patches on the plastic walls of the tubs intentionally for this. So for quick absolute phos removal I used starver with absolute perfection with sps in there as well as most everything else and the on going after some weeks of this to get rid of most of the phos that is leaching from bio medias. I tried some of the guys rowaphos and three other brands and the one that was the best for on going support was the salifert phosphate killer type of gfh. It was gentle, easy to use and kept the phos under 0.03 down to 0.01. Oh and I tried the hanna and salifert tests against each other and the salifert was the same as the hanna each and every time. One of our guys that has a ton of sps he buys from cairns marine that are always thriving with a lot of frags and amazing growth rates, he has used the starver and never had an issue, but remember to use it gently!
  24. These pics at the end are two of my many acans that are firing up and spreading out beautifully. Poor things still haven’t experienced a water change yet and they get all dosing needs from food oxidation and these- Calcium. Dissolve 250 grams Damprid from bunnings in roughly 2 liters of RO water. Just be aware the mix gets a bit hot and with its reaction when the two are combined. Calcium citrate Any calcium coral, seashells, limestone, or dolomite is fine. Then combine with citric acid, lime or lemon will do nicely. Alkalinity Buy some pool alkalinity and PH up from Bunning's and mix 350 grams once it is cooled to 2 liters of RO water and mix for quite a while. Magnesium. Grab 2 cups of Epsom salts and add near double that of magnesium chloride as hexahydrate in neutralised or RO water and mix,” green health” on line has the hexahydrate. This solution isn’t added as often the other two parts, so I put in heaps each time I do add it. Iodide-iodine Is not usually needed as it comes from any foods added, this is for the algae pigments especially for the corals algae. Iron and vitamins. Use the swisse brand liquid iron in the vitamin section of the super market. Amino acids They come from feeding as the oxidation processes release it and algae excretes it as well as a bi product of photosynthesis. A part from old school xr-e diodes, no skimmer or wave makers, its that easy.
