  7. Hello Everyone It is that time again when we get together for our annual Christmas Party. Like last year there will be heaps of giveaways and prizes on the night and it is a great chance to meet or catch up with other QLDAF members. If you are coming we will require you to register to be eligible to receive the discounted prices and win prizes on the night. Details of this will follow later. Regards Russ Redlands Pet Centre
  8. Hello Everyone Sorry for the delay in getting this information up. I see that many of you are coming along so it should be a good night. In the next post below will be a template for registration. We need people to register for 2 reasons: I need to know how many people are coming so I can calculate how many staff are needed. Also as we are using the area in front of the shop we also need to let the shopping centre know how many people are coming as they will need to provide extra security on the night based on the extra influx or people at that time. Since last year we have upgraded our Point of Sale system. We now need to have your details in our system to be able to offer you the discounted products, not just on the night but in the future as well. We won't have time on the night to set up new customer details. Some of you will have already gone through this process but just to make sure, can you please register your details again to make sure that you don't miss out on any discounts on the night, plus we still need to know that you are coming along. We are looking forward to seeing you all again this year and hope that we all have a great time like last year. Regards Russ

  11. I have been doing a bit of hunting around, and getting people send me pictures of fish that have been sold as "Christmas Fulu" There are at least 4 different species of fish involved. Please keep in mind that these are all fish swimming in peoples tanks right now that they were sold as Christmas Fulus and some are being bred ad sold as Christmas Fulus too. None of them look like this: Astatotilapia brownae is a possible contender and there is anecdotal evidence that it was sold as Christmas Fulu in the early days of Vic Haps in Australia. This gives a little hope that there are some pure brownae out there and this fish I found really does resemble brownae pretty well. In addition Frenzy found out his "Christmas Fulus" were brownae too. Then there is A. sp "thick skin" or sp.44 as it is also known. This has been imported as H. obliquidens in the past from information I have gathered (but that is a separate species). These photos are of WA fish that looks like a pure sp. 44 thick skin. Then there are the possible sp. 44 and brownae hybrids like this. Now this next fish is an interesting one. It looks nothing like the above fish. It most resembles a Neochromis rufocaudalis (or nigricans for old timers). Dr. Ole Seehausen has confirmed that a hybrid Aquarium strain has been doing the rounds in Europe for a long time. The real rufocaudalis likely never made it to Australia, only the hybrid aquarium strain. This was discovered in 2010 with UriB's fish. Now it seems this fish has turned up as "Christmas Fulu". As as well as this, I have found fish which resemble sp. dayglow in their colouration but their head shape is wrong. They might not be a "dayglow" hybrid, but that is my working name for them at the moment. Here is a photo that looks like mix of aeneocolor & nyererei. It is interesting that there is a horizontal black stripe from the eye. Hence the confusion. I have tracked down Frenzy's old colony of "Christmas Fulus" which got a positive ID as brownae. The bloodline is still alive in NSW. I have also been sent some pictures of real brownae too as a reference. These fish were from Tasmania. The owner moved them on and stuatus is unknown, but the pictures do provide a good reference. So if you have "Christmas Fulus" cross reference them with some of the photos. Most likely they are hybrids, but there could be a chance that they are sp. 44 or brownae. (I know brownae are available as I have seen them on some online stores, I am just not sure about the blood line. I haven't got that far in the investigation.) I am also collecting photos for future reference about what is being sold as "Christmas Fulu" and if you have a picture that I could use, post it up here for people to see. This whole Christmas Fulu thing is now turned into a great big hoax. Check this out, this picute is being used by an Australian online store to sell Christmas Fulus. But check out where it came from: http://www.african-cichlid.com/XmasFulu.htm The owner of the fish even says it is a hybrid and not the real deal. I know there is not much that we can do as individuals if breeders and wholesalers unwittingly (or deliberately) use the more "sexy" name Christmas Fulu when marketing fish. But if we are aware, we can pass on this information and save tank space for a fish that is endangered in its natural habitat.

  22. Hello Everyone With only a few days to go before the big night, here are some details of what is happening and some pics of the massive amount of prizes we are giving away on the night. Also just for registering we are not only giving you a FREE entry in to the prize draw, you will also receive a FREE QLDAF Christmas Member Night Sample Bag with "goodies" valued at over $40. The official times for the event are from 6.00pm until 8.30pm. We are going to close Redlands Pet Centre at 5pm for one hour while we prepare the shop and feed the staff. We will then re-open exclusively for QLDAF members at 6pm. To register, please send a PM to the user name "Christmas Night Registration" and let us know how many people you will be bringing along, including yourself. This will allow us to hopefully adequately have enough staff on the night. Registration is preferred, but not compulsory. But as a thank you for registering we will be providing a free entry into the massive prize draw and provide the 1st 100 people to register with a QLDAF Christmas Night Sample Bag worth over $40 thanks to our corporate sponsors Aqua One, API, Tetra and AquaMunch. When purchasing your products on the night, we will check your registration to see if you made the 1st 100 people and then give you your QLDAF Christmas Night Sample Bag and your free entry into the massive prize draw. Additionally, for every $20 you spend, we will give you another entry into the prize draw. So if you spend $200 you will receive 10 entries. Entries for the prize draw are raffle tickets. These will be placed in an entry box and drawn at around 8.15pm. To win you have to be there as we are not writing names of tickets. As a winning ticket is drawn, that person will have first choice from the prize pool and so on. There are about 30 prizes so there will be heaps of winners on the night. I will be posting up the specials for the night over this coming weekend so please keep checking back to see what is on offer. There are some great bargains to be had so get in early as some stocks are limited. All specials are only available in store and from 6.00pm. Pre-orders via telephone or PM are welcome, but all goods must be picked up on the night. I really hope you can make it along on the night. We had a great time last year and I am sure that this year will be even bigger. See you on Wednesday Night, Russ
