  1. Can anyone tell me what types of peacocks are considering hybrid and which types are not hybrid? Marble peacock? Dragon Blood Peacock? Tangerine Peacock? Blue Peacock? Sunshine/Yellow Peacock? Eureka Peacock? Ruby red peacock? Maybe more than that I listed as above but I seen some breeder sold D.B peacock on this site before and now I heard that we can't sell D.B peacock. Cheer
  2. Not sure how good the photo is, but this is my flowerhorn. Just got it the other day, and I'm curious what type it is and also what sex it is.
  3. This pic is of a gunther and vagabond mix I see at one site now and then always in a Gunther school, cool colours!
  4. I'm planning on setting up a texas ( escondido ) x jack dempsey spawn and want to know what he outcome would be So share your jack dempsey x texas hybrids Or any jack dempsey hybrids
  5. The water is getting murkier every day on what a blood parrot is, what a king kong parrot is, what a red texas is etc. A bit of a dilemma for the buyer who expects e.g. a parrot that will grow to maybe 15-18cms getting a midevilXparrot or FHXparrot that quickly grows to 30-35cm with damaging mouthparts. And the variability of so called red texas hybrids is even more confusing. Kind of like the difference between a bull terrier and a mini-fox terriers - both dogs and both terriers but that's where it ends. Its even more of a worry when you are breeding and want to get some uniform results. How useful would it be to develop some physical descriptions that a fish has to meet before it can be called and advertised as a blood parrot, KKP, RT etc and how would it best be done?
  6. Hey Guys, Got a fish from a friend of a friend lol, Just wanna know if its a red devil like he said or some sort of hybrid. Also what sex if anyone knows Thanks xlLiquidlx

  9. Get your votes in! Qldaf is currently running a poll to bring us out of the naughty corner and into the light:) http://www.qldaf.com/forums/general-aquarium-discussion-19/what-do-you-think-74665/ Make sure you get your opinions and why you think we deserve a spot in the general forum.. We are also going to change the rules a bit so we can have a more open educational discussion about how and why they came about:) I will start a discussion on what rules we should implement in the future , but for now if you guys could PM me with some ideas and suggestions to take to Russ and the big mods that would be great:) Cheers Matmat
  10. Hey y'all, Just wondering, what are your thoughts on Hybrid Goldfish? I understand they all come from the same species, or most of them anyway, so it's no different from hybridising dog breeds, but like, is it as controversial as cichlids and L numbers? And of course, I'm not saying do it for the sake of doing it, I'm saying, you have a trait in one breed, say, goggle eyes from a Black Moore, and you want some kind of head growth and no dorsal fin, could you breed a Black Moore with a Ranchu and possibly get something like this? Or is that not the way it works? Also, how many of the fancy species can't breed naturally? Thanks a heap people of the internetz!

  12. Please be aware that the creation of new hybrids is not supported by QLDAF. Hybridisation both deliberate and accidental has caused it to be now almost impossible to get pure strains of certain cichlids, most notable amongst these fish being Trimacs. QLDAF does however provide a section to discuss the keeping and behaviour of hybrid fish shuch as flowerhorns. This section is an opt in section accessed through Your Profile>MySettings>Edit Usergroups. Or simply follow the link below. http://www.qldaf.com/vbb/profile.php?do=editusergroups
  13. for one i have no idea on hybrids was just thinking to myself. (may already be done?) if you were able to breed a super red x super green tex could they have a chance of turning purple for there other phase because that would be badass. or i could be totally wrong and that sh*t would never work . shane
  14. Hi all, I understand this is a sore point with breeders, but can it be defined what are the common and knowm hydrids, I see there is much conjecture relating to some fish, ie some discus, angels, guppies etc are not the same as found in nature they have been breed to inhance colours, so I ask, what makes the fish a hybrid, what are the rules, what is on the list and why are some not BIG NOTE, I am not looking to discuss Hybrid fish, ei making how too, just what makes it a hybrid, whats already a know type and whats on / off the list Ben

New hybrid policy Ok people, We have brought in a few hybrid section, you cannot see it yet! Basically we are sick of being the bad guys in relation to hybrid fish, we understand they are hear to stay and will not go away, The new section if opt-in only, you do not have to take part, and we would prefer if you didn't. However there are two new sections, one for the discussion and one for trading. you are NOT aloud to discuss the creation of new hybrids. However you can discuss the fish and behaviour. & Also trade in them if you wish. Hybrids will still remain a banned topic on the rest of the forum! We will however move or delete hybrid posts if put in the wrong section incorrectly and honestly. Understand the rules before joining, as failure to do so will result in a ban. Now if you want to join, Visit, http://www.qldaf.com/vbb/profile.php?do=editusergroups Or from your profile > My Settings > Edit Usergroups to join. Cheers, Grum. Last edited by liljohn_83; Yesterday at 10:35 PM. Reason: spelling Share | Like fish is adictive be carefull I wave been thinking about this for a few days... I understand why hybrids are bad for... well the planet really, keeping species pure and yada yada yada, there are many arguments on this and I see both sides of the fence. On this I guess we should not eat fish or keep them at all for that matter! How many red tail black sharks are left in the wild? (none! And I don't think we ate em all) And I'm pretty sure they weren't used to create flowerhorns. Anyway that's a bit off track but why is there a hybrid section? If we can't talk about them? Does breeding habits come onto the banned discussion list? Is that behavior or creation? Is there going to be a section for mutations? Such as EBJD. I just don't understand why there is a section you don't want people to join or use? Is there something I'm missing (other than brain cells) I'm sure I will be pecked apart just for asking, but that's ok. Cheers Mat
  16. OK a mate of mine has a colony of Red Zebras and a Colony of Hongi in the same Tank, It appears that the Hongi has fertilized the Red Zebras eggs or Vise Versa and the fry are up to 1-2 inch and have the Red zebra color but the Hongi's markings also, what should be done about these fish ? Thanks Tom.

  18. Figured I'd throw this one out there to create a stir. QLDAF currently looks down upon the breeding and distribution of hybrids, regardless of quality. The ultimate purpose of QLDAF having a negative stance on hybrids is to facilitate the maintenance of genuine species. Many of the species used by breeders to create hybrids are import restricted, and cross-breeding (deliberate or accidental) has a heavy negative effect on the lines that we're lucky enough to have present. Currently, we do not allow promotion or advertisement of the following species: - Flowerhorns & Similiar Hybrids (Typical trimaculatus/labiatus/citrinellum/synspilum hybrids) - Blood Parrots - Accidental Hybrids (Non-recognised "Backyard" Hybrids) I'm especially interested what people think about the following: - Aulonocara Hybrids (Dragon Blood/Peacock Hybrids) - Aquarium Strain Symphysodon (Discus) - Aquarium Strain Pterophyllum (Angelfish) - Electric Blue Jack Dempseys - "Marbled" V. fenestratus .. and just for the sake of it, opinions on non-hybrid: - Longfin/Balloon Varieties My opinions? I'm sticking to the opinion that "natural is beautiful": everything listed above does not appeal to me in the slightest. That sounds like a pretty good way to kick start a bias argument some might say, but that is my honest opinion. Regarding Hybrids, particularly Flowerhorns and other CA mutts, I firmly believe that regardless of the "control" some hybrid breeders pretend to take over the preservation of lines, somewhere along the line fish they have bred already have and will taint the limited lines of natural species that we can no longer import, such as Amphilophus and Vieja species. Blood Parrots simply disgust me, as they appeal primarily to the less-experienced market demographic who are more than likely unaware that they are essentially a deformed hybrid mess. I look at balloon varieties in the same light as a similar "market fad" for pawning off deformed specimens. I don't know what to think about the Discus and Angel situation. If I was to ever keep these specimens in the future, they would always be wild strain. While many of the colour morphs may technically be hybrids, Discus and Angelfish are still legal imports, allowing us to replenish natural lines. Unfortunately, I think most of the damage has already been done. I would like this thread to remain as constructive as possible. Any personal attacks that aren't above board or don't relate to the topic at hand will be simply removed. If enough people get involved we might just end up with a solid debate and consensus of what hobbyists truly think of much-argued dilemma. What are your thoughts? Edit: Just to clarify, this is not to form a ruleset. It's simply a discussion.
  19. Curiosity got the better of me and thought how many would be pro and how many against...
  20. I saw these in a LFS today. The colouring had me wondering if they are the real thing or if a hybrid. http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt58 ... 1fd0f3.jpg Nice looking fish but I just don't know. What do you think? Thought I would leave it up to 'The Brains Trust'. (Btw. They are in a tank next to a couple of PACKED 'Assorted Cichlid's' tanks.) Rob
  21. Hello, Can anyone tell me what species of cichlid This fish is? He looks almost like a very dull coloured Electric yellow? Maybe he is hybrid?
