  1. I have a 6x2x1.5 African display tank (mainly haps, peacocks and some mbuna). I have had 4 bristlenose in there with them for the last 12 months. Over the last 48 hrs, all of the bristlenose have died and not really sure what is going on. The other fish seem fine and the water parameters are as follows (before water change): PH: 7.9 Ammonia: Looks like 0.0 on the colour chart, although possibly between 0.0 and 0.25). This may have been due to dead bristlenose. Nitrite: 0.0 Nitrate: between 40 and 80ppm I think some were dead for around 24hrs.....any ideas what could be going on? I have just done a 40% water change and will monitor what is going on, but it is strange that they have all died with 48hrs. I have a cuckoo in there as well which seems fine.
  2. edit: This appeared to be a loose tooth that burst through his lip, and after perhaps 30 hours of not eating and not wanting to move, he fixed it himself. Have spent a while searching but cannot find anything quite like this, so posting here and hope someone can steer me in the right direction. Also, can anyone recommend a book or website for viewing fish health issues? Seems our sponsors have http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/catalogue_products.php?prodID=3207&catID=67 but nil in stock http://i1038.photobucket.com/albums/a461/isarich/tex%20growth_zpsoute7iqj.jpg Problem:- Growth on mouth Ph:- 7.4 Ammonia:- Nil Nitrate:- Less than 5ppm Nitrite:- Less than 2ppm Gh:- 5 or 6 degrees Kh:- Aprox 10 degrees Size of tank:- 6Ft 800L plus 200L sump Temperature °C:- 27 to 29 Been running for:- 2 months. Filtration:-Canister/Sump/Internal Filter/Sponge:- adequate media in Sump, low t/o of 1500L/H, plus two large air pump sponges for surface movement and mechanical. Fish in tank:- Juvenile clown loaches, venustus, electric yellow labs, and 2ea 13-14cm red parrots, 1ea 18cm common pleco, 1ea juvenile (7cm) oscar. Parrots get chased by SGTexas, no other dramas in tank, all fish cohabit well. Plants in Tank:- None Feeding:- What food and How often twice daily, all consumed in less than 3 minutes 'except' some of the algae wafer tablets. Recent Medication Treatments:- None. 3. First I need a positive ID on this guy please. Second is this strange habit its started in last few weeks. Added airstone thinking it might want air, even though all other fish were behaving normally. I now believe its doing this on purpose. Barstard aims at us. Lol. Thoughts?? Watch "Squirty squirt." on YouTube
  4. I had some extremely strange fish deaths last night. At about 6:30pm I noticed the two largest fish in the tank were acting a little strange, nothing crazy but the odd flash from the 5 1/2 inch Venustus had me watching carefully. 3 hours later, both the 8 inch Tandanus and the Venustus were dead . It seemed the Venustus had been dead for at least an hour or more longer than the Tandan. Now, at this stage I tried to work out wtf went wrong. I had done a water change, it was a hot day, I added fine foam to the filter and the powerhead had stopped working overnight so I had to give it a whack to get it working again. Now, the first thing I noticed was that my male guppy culls were all swimming around in the tank seemingly unfazed, which seemed weird as these two larger fish were dead as door nails. Anyway I measured and examined the dead fish... *May not be for the overly squeamish* I noticed the Tandanus was very, very plump, so much so that I could have put its death down to bloat. So out came the fine scissors and I opened up its stomach. EGGS! Heaps and Heaps of EGGS! I estimated between 600 and 900 eggs in total contained in two individual eggs sacks. The eggs were mostly very well developed with some not quite ready for laying, they were very large for the size of the fish. Why the hell did an 8 inch Tandanus cat have sooooo many eggs? Well, after wrapping my head around that I proceeded to dissect the venustus, EGGS AGAIN! Only a very small amount of underdeveloped eggs here but healthy looking none the less. Interesting. I removed the filter foam at this point, assuming it was leeching a chemical of some kind. So I chucked 1/2 a dozen more male guppy culls in the tank along with 3 females and left them for the night. Next morning... ALL 3 FEMALES DEAD, males seemingly unfazed. I didn't examine the female guppys as they are two small for me to analyse properly with the gear I have here. In summary, something only killed off the female fish in the tank. Both developed eggs, the Tandanus developed a grotesque amount, seemingly in the hours before dying. What could have caused this? Any body experienced similar? ATM I have put it down to chemicals in the foam but I am unsure. *Can post pictures of the whole fish and the Tandanus eggs if anyone is interested.

  6. A tiny little bit of blue was amongst some algae I added a while back and this came from that tiny peice? Oh and its getting bigger and in the tank it gets eaten straight away but at the back of the tank where this one is, I cut some off and toss it and it grows back, so pretty! I thought it might be blue green algae, but it doesn’t fit the profile.
  7. Hi Guys, Just after some advice...again. I have a couple of things going on. Water parameters PH- 6.8 (ish) Temp 26 Nitrite 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrate about 10- 20 ppm (i know that's a bit high, water changes last night and tonight again if needed) 4ft 200ltr tank (25% water change weekly) Stock, 3 x BN, 10 Neons, 8 Danios, 1 guppy, 3 Mollies, 1 x Sailfin Pleco, 1 Angelfish Firstly i have lost 3 angel fish in the last week, a few weeks ago i had Angelfish eggs, then about a week after the female i found dead, i thought the male may have beaten it up, last Sunday the second Angelfish dead (that's the two females gone), and this morning a third swimming very slowly on its side and then would just fall to the bottom of the tank( i am sure it will be dead by the time i get home) , all were somewhat smaller than the dominant male that is left, although all started out the same size when i got them, i had put this down to bullying but i am not sure. During the same period (over a couple of weeks) i had three mollies die, might sound strange but i had 3 black and three white, only the black mollies have died. I make the point that there were no signs of disease on any of the fish, but the angel fish did have their fins quite chewed up bu the looks of things except for the one i found this morning. And last night i had my male BN who also has breed in the last couple of weeks (although it seems the babies all bare one have been eaten , or something) and once again i had put it down to the male angelfish probably having snacks when the babies came out of the BN cave, anyway the male BN has this strange excretion from it that doesn't look right. So now i am thinking that i may have a bigger problem, i have only been back in the hobby for a few months now and just cant seem to take a trick. Any help is appreciated.
  8. Hi everyone. I am having an issue with one of my yellow tail acei. She is the tank boss of an mbuna only tank. There are 15 mbuna in total, most are juveniles. Over the last four days I have observed her shaking her head and having some kind of spasm. I am not confusing this with the shaking that happens when fish are trying to instigate mating or to warn others off. From my observation this is happening approximately once every few hours and often when she is swimming alone with no other fish nearby. She will be swimming along then come to a jerking stop, have a spasm which involves shaking her head and then go forward, stop with a jerk again, shake head and then return to normal swimming. If she was human I would say she was having a fit of some kind. I cannot see any visual indicators of disease on her. She is active and eating well. There have been 2 recent changes that I have made but I don’t see how they could be affecting her. 1) 5 days ago I moved all my mbuna from my 4ft to my 5ft to give them more swimming room and more rocks/caves. The tank is being filtered by their old canister with the mature media. I did clean this but only the same as I always do when doing my regular maintenance. 2) I added 3 new juveniles to tank. BUT, I observed this behaviour in acei BEFORE they were added. I am at a loss as to what is happening with her. She is the only one doing this. And this was not happening in old tank. My water parameters are good 0 nitrite, 0 ammonia, 10 nitrate. I only feed them food specifically made for mbuna i.e. veg or spirulina based pellets and flake as well as shelled peas and zucchini. It could be purely a tank boss thing - but my gut is telling me that something is wrong with her. If it was a parasite wouldn’t they all be doing it? What could it be? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.
  9. Hi everyone, I have a Tank display tank, mostly Juvies: 4 x Birundi 1 male 3 x Alto Comp, 1 male 1 female 1 too little to tell likely female. 6 x Leleupi no sex yet 6 x Brichardi 3 each I think, paired and happy! 3 x Juli Transcriptus but may have been too small and be swimming around the Frontosa's belly... Anyway, all is going well, except the male Birundi and Female Comp seem to have paired and the Male Comp and a female Birundi have as well... It's a display tank so I won't be rearing any fry, but can they even cross?
  10. Was at the aquarium shop yesterday for supplies and stood watching the marine set ups as I always do, dreaming of having my own one day and saw a Duncan's coral with a clown fish half stuck inside one of its mouths. The poor clown fish was history. A friend who is a marine biologist said this is quite unusual as they generally eat plankton and other smaller creatures. What other strange things does everyone's fish do? I love how they all have their own little personalities. My Oscar has a love affair with the hose every time I do a water change lol quite funny to watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I have lost a few of my electric yellows with sunken belly and a couple of other larger yellows without the sunken belly. I have tried seperating the sunken belly fish and feeding them up with a tablet the LFS gave me to grind up and mix with a shot of vodka into my food to bind the two with no luck. I also notice the fish seem to be scratching themselves against the gravel. Would this be itch? I have been searching online but am still confused. I raised the temperature of my tank to 30 yesterday as I read doing this for 7 days can kill off the parasites. Any help is greatly appreciated! I dont want to loose any more fish
  12. Hi guys Found this request for an id on one of the facebook groups .... and its been driving me crazy trying to google the answer ... hoping someone here might have the answer "Anyone know what these are? 13. I have a large male electric blue in with about 40 other cichlids. The reason I'm concerned is that he is showing similar signs to low oxygenated water (constantly gasping for water/air.) apart from gasping he is fine, eating, swimming normal etc, this has been the case for about a week. The weird part is that he is the only one doing it, all the other fish are perfectly fine and happy. This one has me a bit confused, hopefully someone else a bit wiser can help me out Thanks in advance for your help
  14. Hi guys, I was just looking for a bit of advice on the behaviour of one of my cichlids. Firstly i would like to id this fish, secondly in the video attached if you look at its mouth, it looks as though it cant or wont open it, and it swims around the tank flaring it nostrills i guess you call it. Would anyone know what might be happening? Hopefully the link works

  16. I think my little buddy might be sick. It's been hiding a lot and just doesn't seem interested in anything. Currently he's on top of the castle laying flat on its belly. He's not going sideways, but not swimming around either. I do weekly water changes and gravel cleaning. I'm fairly new to fish keeping so I don't know if he is sick or what's going on really. I did start them on a different brand of food yesterday, but none of my other fish...or electric yellows have been affected in any way, he hasn't been attacked or anything so I'm at a loss as to what's going on.
  17. Found this strange website http://ookatayouji.amaminchu.com/ while reading up on the bloke that broke the story on the weird puffer fish spawning sites AKA the underwater crop circles Anyway its worth a random look, even if it is all in japanese lol If you dont know about the underwater cropcircles check these links http://www.spoon-tamago.com/2012/09/18/deep-sea-mystery-circle-love-story/ http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2012/09/mysterious-underwater-crop-circle-art-discovered-off-the-coast-of-japan/
  18. A couple of my Tiger Barbs seem to enjoy flicking their body along the airline in my tank. It can happen one at a time for a few seconds, and sometimes up to 4 at a time for a few seconds. I've felt the airline, and it's a little slimey, but the water was only changed yesterday and I added Aquamaster Armour Coat. Just not sure it's normal behaviour and my Platy has just started to do it as well.
  19. i've just started cycling my tank & i've notticed lots of little worms appear. there must have been eggs in the gravel. ? what do i do? if they r there when i add fish are the fish gonna die? or eat the worms? the worms genrally rummidge through the gravel & r about a centermeter long. i used rain water to fill my tank i used mary river gravel that i washed thoroughly & some gravel from the last owner of the tank that i rinsed well. any advice is welcome thanks in advance
  20. Check this one out guys, its around six mil and then the extensions,so the longest from one extension to the other from right to left is around 40 mil I have had it for over a year and find the weird little thing amusing. It hasn't moved in the whole year it has been in there. I try to move it and the extensions just stretch and so i stop so it doesn’t harm it. To the best of what i can see it harms nothing at all. I assume it's an opportunistic feeder as in planktonic maybe. I have sat fish on it to see if it has a sting and it harms nothing, including my more sensitive wrist skin. It is soft but spongy and firm. The extensions reach out and contract very slowly. And it is in the shade always. Any opinions as to what it is that will lead to its Latin name?
  21. Hey guys, My female angelfish is acting a bit odd. She had a sore on here left side which was white but now has gone black and the bump is disappearing. But she seems to be twitching which i have never seen before. A tube has also appeared on her anus which i have never seen before. She has on only just paired up with a male angel my tank recently. Should i be concerned?
  22. I keep finding these bugs in my 6ft tank and have no idea what they are. I keep getting rid of them. Are they bad for the fish. Could they have come from my live soil I purchased for my plants? Anyone know if they are bad for the tank and fish? Thanks in advance
  23. Hi All, I was cleaning my tank this evening when I found this little thing (actual size is approximately 5mm) trying to hide in the substrate. I quickly got the tweezers and 'fished' him out but now I'm concerned because I don't know what it is or if there will be anymore. Could someone please: 1. let me know what it is 2. if it poses a threat to my fish tank. Cheers, Steve
