Giant Pink Gourami - The "Billabong" Adventures

Recommended Posts

I've already seen him cruise straight past "Rogue" without drama. The GPGs are twice his size plus a bit more. He must have wriggled up from a local creek ;-) ☺ It's amazing the things that happen in your Billabong! !!!

Big W has pools for sale!

These are my "backups" for the GPG Billabong;

a 10ft diameter, and approximately 3,600+ litres.

Also, they will be potential nurseries for any baby

GPGs that happen to appear :baby:

post-5372-14711634297566_thumb.jpg

No, no...

I'm not buying all of them!

The $ budget only stretches to 2 or 3 :pop2:

I may need to have a quiet chat with the local Big W

store, as their online advertising has them at $55ea!!

Funny how the description says "Your family will have hours of fun during summer with this..." In your case, its your family of GPGs! Love this thread, keep it up!

Thanx!

The first thing I'll do when I get them is to throw away the dodgy Mr & Mrs with the 2.5 kids - can't have them swimming with the fishies LOL !!

Grover :-)

Be careful with the inflatable pvc pools with your fishes as their pec fins can easily pierce a hole in the pool

Hi crazy4fish,

You're right - last time I used these back at Windsor I had someone (presumably a plec)

poke a pin-hole in the side of one - lucky it was just a small leak and not an explosive

pool-failure

Also,

don't do this when swimming with your fish in your pool! LOL

In amongst the rain-drops, I managed a bit of progress...

post-5372-14711634304834_thumb.jpg

Another visit to my version of the LFS - Bunnings (?!) saw me

buy the weed mat - that went down without too much trouble.

Remember to tuck under one side at the back, and I'll have to

find some old pavers to line the front edge.

Managed to rescue something that looks vaguely fern-like in

the center, so that's the current extent of the "gardening" !

As always, the dog helped, during the weed-mat exercise, but

then I noticed the palings trying to leeeeeap off the fence, hence

the drill & accessories. Mind you, drilling thru hardwood palings

into hardwood 3x2s tends to suck the life out of the little cordless

Bosch drill - at this point dog was noticeable by her absence when

selected "uncouth" words were applied to the drill, the fence, the

brass screws, and the process in general

Still, am happy with the interim result. You can also see a small

lot of the expanded clay aggregate that I want to use in the BBT.

Obviously, I'm going to need a few more bucket-loads :whip:

Cheers for now,

Grover

The blue pool cover comes off the Billabong!

post-5372-14711634327882_thumb.jpg

Notice the "top-class" photo-shopping to get that BIG picture LOL !

post-5372-14711634328392_thumb.jpg

Yes, the GPGs have been spotted surfacing and they won't be

exposed to kookaburras and sea-eagles for too long. My

daughter comes to stay this weekend and she's going to be

roped into helping put up the 15ft shade cover.

Today's effort will be to add the iris plant pots around the edge,

so that the gouramis can start practicing nest building. Some-

time down the track, I'll disassemble the 20mm"soccer-stadium"

framework and build GPG nest holders from its remains!

Next year's framework will be made from heavier 25mm Medium

Duty Rigid Electrical Conduit (also from my LFS - Bunnings!).

Well!

The iris plants seem to have gone wild over Winter in

a very quiet way. From on top it all looked normal,

but underneath was a riot of new tubers and tangled

root systems!!

The photoshopping skills are slightly improved...

post-5372-14711634332073_thumb.jpg

and I've decided to plant just the shallow end, so that when one

gets knocked off the ledge I don't need scuba gear to retrieve it!

The guardians of the Billabong are back on duty :behindsofa:

Afternoon update...

I've got to get my GPG Nest Frame manufacturing into gear,

as the giants were cruising up and inspecting the iris plants

and the pool edge spaces in between. So this arvo's job was

to start dismantling the pool cover frame :-)

Tonight's feeding session (sponsored by ALDI lettuce & peas)

saw at least 10-15 GPGs surfacing in the dusk shadows with

some startled flips causing waves to rock back and forwards

across the pool! There's more ggs in there somewhere!

Sadly, the Oscars are tiddly-tiny compared to the GPGs, and I

thought the 4 larger oscars were nicely sized when they were

all I could see coming out to be fed under the blue pool cover.

cheers,

Grover

The blue pool cover is gone and the shade cover is up!!!

The iris are starting to flower...

post-5372-14711634336061_thumb.jpg

The cover wasn't that difficult to put together...

post-5372-14711634336284_thumb.jpg

The Oscars wanted to help, but just got photographed again...

post-5372-14711634336509_thumb.jpg

And the Billabong looks sparkly and inviting (if you're a fish!)...

The Toga WILL jump out sooner or later.

I'm sorta hoping it will be "later" rather than "sooner" LOL !

There's a 7inch (180mm) drop from the coping to the water,

but it may not be enough. I've seen a GPG clear that height

from one side to the other when they were in the old GPG Lake!

Looks amazing! Will have to come and visit! Wheres the underwater videos while its nice and clear from not being in direct sun? :P

ahh...

I'll give the underwater camera a whirl, but I think the water is going green faster than I can filter it!

Still waiting for my Bog Bed Tank to be ready

ooo errrrr...

Now that Spring has Sprung I start to get my act together...

Yesterday and today saw the draining of one of the 10ft (3.05m) pools that housed the iris plants

and grew copious amounts of elodea for consumption by the GPGs.

post-5372-14711634349829_thumb.jpg

It looks a mess - but that's fine 'cause it's going in the wheelie bin! The floating plant you can see

was a thick coating of Azolla - it went bright red with the amount of sunlight it was getting and just

about smothered nearly all the underwater palnts - I had to keep making holes in the mat of plants

to keep the elodea alive.

post-5372-14711634350158_thumb.jpg

The replacement is only an 8footer (2.44m), but that's because it has to fit in between the BBQ

area and the garden shed - 10ft was too squeezy, and was wedged into the BBQ stand and the

back garden bed :-/ (That happy family in the photo on the box is being evicted for more fish!)

You can also appreciate the silkworms sourced from grubby not so long ago! They are thriving

on mulberry leaves from the nice next-door neighbour. I did try feeding a few to the Oscars, but

they weren't particularly thrilled about them - they much prefer earthworms (or as our American

friends term them - "nightcrawlers").

post-5372-14711634350389_thumb.jpg

Hmmm...

The photo above looks like I've run a 'posterise' photoshop function over it. You'll realise I did take

it tonight with a dodgy camera setting. Anyway, this is where all the spare iris plants are stting

until I get some more pots, some more sand, and some more energy to re-pot them all and drop

them in the new pool.

At some point (when budget gets approved) the other 10fter will come down and get replaced as

well - though by another 10fter as it has space around it. The reason is that while the pools are

great as spare capacity or emergency use, I tend to only trust them for a year in Queensland's UV

sunlight - hence their replacement before they go :puke:

Any other reason why I'm re-setting these pools? Ahh... yes...!

To have some spare capacity for fishie emergencies. Not that I need any fishie emergencies, thanx LOL.

But I've just seen Scott Ridley's "The Martian" and while Mars looks a little dry for aquaculture, you can

be sure that I want to have the technology to handle the sort of aquatic excitements that happen to

us all from time to time.

Cheers for now

The OZquatic is a success!

post-5372-14711634356312_thumb.jpg

This one actually fits in the space and still lets me get to the clothes line, the shed, and the dodgy

BBQ storage bit (s'ok - there's no BBQ to light up!). As quoted on the box - "Water capacity: at

80% capacity the pool holds approximately 2,300 litres of water". Of course, I'm running

it at about 90%!

Next weeks' effort will be to clean out the other 10ftr and see how many platies have survived all

by themselves!

Grover
