Fish for my pond?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've had a pond for the past 15 years and I've finally decided I want to throw some fish in there to keep the water clean. I've got 2 plants in there at the moment (a lily and some other tall plant with large leaves) but no pump/filter. I chucked a few blue claws in there way back when I had excess feeders for the Oscar I had but I never saw them again (birds I'm guessing) and years ago I had a few gold fish in there that must have come in with the plants.

It's an old, bone-shaped, fiberglass, sand covered pond that's 3/4 buried, mostly shaded by the large gums in our yard and the small bushes around it and I don't have immediate plans to put a filter/pump on it. I might throw a little solar powered pump on it in 6 months or so just for looks but I want to see what fish will live happily in it until then. As soon as I put something in there I'll put some mesh or something over it to keep the birds/leaves out.

I've had the thought of putting a heap of BN in there to clean it up and then slowly selling them off later for a bit of extra pocket money. I also thought about buying more red or blue claw to put in and see how they go, I can always eat the excess cray.

What do you guys recommend I put in there?

there is nothing clean about bn haha there poo monsters haha, as lictoga said natives are the way to go. blue eyes are easy to get so are rainbows (catch them local) rhads are always good too and all of them should breed if you chuck a little val in there with them (just put it in pots)

Maybe go to your local shop and grab some feeder fish which generally are fire tailed gudgeons and start with those as a clean up crew. Assume if no fish life has been in the pond for sometime there would be a lot of wrigglers etc to be eaten by the new inhabitants.
