Pet Barn is on a roll ~ is it good for the hobby?

Recommended Posts

Just found out that for the second time in the last 12 months, the Pet Barn chain has bought out and taken over a longstanding independently owned Gold Coast pet shop.

100% Pets at Tweed Heads has now joined Coomera Pet Barn as a member of the Pet Barn chain :(

Now neither of these shops was a specialist lfs, but both did have a strong interest in the fish side of the hobby and tried to maintain a wider range of fish than the basic "bread and butter" species usually stocked by these chain stores.

Both shops as part of the Pet Barn chain are now required to stock only a limited range of fish purchased exclusively from a Melbourne based wholesaler.

You may be aware that the Pet Barn chain also took over the City Farmers chain last year. This appears to be a corporation intent on dominating the whole pet supply industry by taking out the competition. Reminds me of a couple of other major corporations that started by dominating the grocery industry.

If this has happened twice in the last 12 months on the Gold Coast, it is probably happening around Australia.

Personally I don't believe this situation is beneficial for the fishkeeping hobby.

We can't blame the struggling owners of existing businesses for taking the money offered, we can only help make that decision harder for them by supporting their businesses.

Think about this next time you, your family and friends are looking at supporting your local chain pet barn by spending your money there.

i let my money do the talking. i dont shop there on principal, crap selection of fish and what they do stock is diseased, under fed or sick.

i personally dont think they are a threat to a good lfs. You cant beat good quality, impeccable knowledge and great products.

companys hiring 16 year olds who dont know the difference between american cichlids or african cichlids wont last.

if your really concerned vote with your feet or should i say money.

We had to change vets for our dogs and cat when Greencross took over our local vet, we got sick of them aggressively trying to cross-sell and upsell everything under the sun every time we took the animals in for their yearly shots :(

That's what I said, we changed vets, and I don't spend a cent at any of the Pet Barn chain stores either.

If you look at the bigger picture though, Lionel, corporate monopolies are not good for any industry or hobby in the long run.

i dont mind the discount i get from greenscross. but if my vet leaves so will i. If you find someone who does a good job and you trust then back them 100% and youll notice the support they give you back. <- can be applied to most businesses.

Given i buy most my fish needs from out of town when it comes to the things i can get local the chain stores are my last resort.

bad news if you ask me...in a nutshell pet barn suck when it comes to the hobby of fish keeping..at least city farmers offered fishkeeping knowledge and some variety with fish plus had some good fish people on board...all that has been destroyed and some great names in the industry forced out...and so now hopefully more customers will use the great LFS's out there that know there stuff and supply options for the hobbyist...the aquarium section of petbarn is an embarrassment to the pet industry(offers nothing fish wise for someone actually interested and Im really curious as to who there could guide you in the right direction with keeping fish??)..well I guess if you offer crap selection you can probably offer crap advice :eyebrows:...it shows a real lack of interest when it comes to the hobby and this is disrespectful to keen hobbyists...do they really think what they offer is better than what was in place beforehand?(or more like don't give a sh*t)...I hope no one buys anything aquarium based from them...why have anything to do with the aquarium hobby petbarn if you don't care? :noidea: that's my 5c whinge for the day :bolt:

They're quickly becoming the coles and wollies of the pet industry.

I already avoid those yellow buildings like the plague but too many people go there for their little fluffies instead of their independent pet store. In the process, our hobby gets stuffed as too many people view fish as disposable pets. Just look at how many tanks are for sale on scum tree...

I'm worried that one day all the fish that will be available will be 'assorted cichlids', 'assorted goldfish', 'assorted mollies and platies', and a sucking catfish. No quality or variety just some generic terms for the fish.

At least in that scenario there is a duopoly. Now that PetBarn and City Farmers are a single entity, they seem to be fast on the way to a monopoly. I think it may be worse here in WA; some of the stores are barely 10 minutes drive apart.

I saw a video just this morning; a cat person vs dog person scenario in which it was said that "fish people are the worst. They aren't real pets anyway, they are decorations". Decorations FFS. That made me sad.

I already see this here, and City Farmers has basically become Pet Barn in terms of the junk fish they sell already. Luckily, my local Pet City, while not exactly great, has improved a lot in terms of the fish variety and quality lately (except the goldfish are still absolute junk that look like they probably should have been culled).

The pet barn near my work had juvi convicts in with the africans a week or so ago.

What takes the cake though is the misses went in one day and asked for something to put in the goldfish tank as she thought it would be nice to have something else in there. They suggested mollies... Within a couple hours of being put into the tank the gold fish had lost a large % of their fins. Lost a few of them as they couldn't move around any more.(one survivor was named Nemo) After recovering from my breakdown when I got home seeing what the GF had done, tried to take the mollies back to PB who refused to do anything. They ended up as food for my americans.

Only go in there for the cat food now.

If we all end up working for them..... surely the fish will improve!

Perhaps these stores closing are all part of an elaborate infiltration operation?

Maybe age of aquariums needs to start opening up more franchises and become a chain store? ;)

Redland bay is a thriving metropolis which would much appreciate an aoa... Sure 90% of the population are in their 80s but im sure they could get involved
