Bacteria in Canister Filter

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I was wondering what everyone's thought is on how long beneficial bacteria can survive in a canister filter during power outage or a house move? What is the best way too keep it alive in these situations?

All helpful advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Last time I moved house I used an air stone and battery air pump shoved down in the filter and hoped for the best, I didn't lose any fish so I guess it worked. For power outages, I recommend having a generator handy at all times.

I hope that helps a bit.

So many variables.

If its hot, or the canister is really filthy........ then not long.

Otherwise its very difficult to predict.

The safe way is to remove the canister media, clean it using old aquarium water and then place it in a bucket with old aquarium water and an airstone driven by a battery powered airpump.

Once the move is done, or power back on...... you just reassemble the canister and away you go.
