Sophiaczarkowski
Hi everyone. I'm in Yeppoon in CQ. I have 2 Blue Dolphins and a Peacock not sure on type. Hoping to breed the Dolphins soon. I'll possibly be chasing a couple more females soon too. Does anyone have tips on identifying females - I know it's hard? none
Males have longer fins and a big hump on their heads. Also more body colour. Gets quite obvious at approx 9 - 12cm

Sophiaczarkowski
Thank you so much! I have attempted to attach a photo. Hopefully it works they are hard to get decent photos of. I think this shows the peacock and the 2 dolphins are a bit blurry.
TED
hi and welcome. many people on here to help you out as bully already mentioned. im not 100% sure but i think the other fish in the photo is not a african peacock. it looks like a juvenile texas cichlid. an american cichlid. Sophiaczarkowski
Thanks Ted. Here's a closer picture. If it's an American Cichlid that may explain why they really dislike each other. Both him and the male blue dolphin are very aggressive. But there is only 3 fish in a 3 ft tank so they have lots of room and generally stay out of each other's way.
TED
yeah. the closer picture confirms its a texas cichlid. they actually grow quite large and are aggressive like the majority of large american cichlids. african and american cichlids require different water conditions buuuuut some people still say they can be kept together but i wouldnt recomend it. the texas will end up bulling the african cichlids and if your planning on breeding the dolphins it could spell trouble down the track. Bully
Well in TED... -This is why this forum is so good, u have just stopped a mass killing.. As he said Africans and American don't mix.. Do some research on which one your most keen on Sophiaczarkowski and set up for that as they are both different. At least you found out before it killed everything.. Good luck
Donny@ageofaquariums
ok googled some pics for reference heres a pair of venustus, different species but you can see the same type of differences and here is what you really want to see when dolphins breed! Sophiaczarkowski
Wow thanks everyone. The now texas cichlid was sold to me as a peacock - I've had him for about 2 years - he had a friend originally also sold as a peacock but the friend ended up in solitary due to aggression he escaped and was killed by the Texas. Meaning the texas was the only fish in the 3ft tank for a long time. It's a touch choice but he may have to go...I don't really want a mass murderer in my fish tank. I have seen the Dolphins do the mating dance mouth to tail and circling a number of times. So it may be time to pass the fish to a friend or back to the Pet Shop. Thank you again so much for your help! And for stopping a mass murder. Sophia Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
gpodge
The now texas cichlid was sold to me as a peacock - I've had him for about 2 years ....Wow really!!! That fish is 2 years old?? In proper conditions (eg tank size, water parameters, feeding etc) it should be upwards of 10 inches long..... strange, very strange. How big is it? Given your tank size, in the photo it looks about 3 inches? A 2 year old chould be sooo much bigger!
Sophiaczarkowski
Hey gpodge. Yep 2 years old - it's 3in give or take. I thought it was odd as the big male blue dolphin (Fido) has been in the tank about 3months and has tripled in size already. They eat the same if anything Texas eats more - he polished off about 6 feeder fish yesterday. They get cichlid food pellets in the morning, frozen blood worms at night and feeder fish once per week as well as as much plant as they can eat / destroy. They go through 2-3 plants per week. Wow that's a lot of food when I write it all down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It's looking like St Lawrence or higher will cop the brunt. I live in Yeppoon work in Rocky so probably have tomorrow off. We didn't feel the earthquake. I hope your tanks were okay and survived ??? And of course your house. Stay safe and dry. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

grubby
The eye is over Gladstone now by the look of things. It almost scarier to be in the eye as everything is dead calm after all that wind. Probably our turn Saturday.
Sophiaczarkowski
Yeah our winds are down to 160km/hr now. Hoping it'll be over soon. I have a few new garden ornaments but the good news is my habanero bushes have survived last time I went near a window it still had 2 chillis on it.
