Astronotus Swainson, 1839 - The Cichlid Room Companion

You really need to join as a member to get the full benefits from The Cichlid Room Companion.

But you can see the two photos to the left of the page for examples of wild oscars.

And if you look down the list of described species from the genus, you'll see the 6th one is Astronotus ocellatus zebra Pellegrin , 1904. Which I take to mean that it is likely a location variant of Ocellatus.

I've always known Zebra Oscars to be the ones that show an almost black/dark brown and white pattern when younger, which still does change to an orange/red over the body in adults.

Wild caught Oscars that I've seen look quite different from Zebra's being a lighter brown and still exhibiting (smaller amounts) of red pattern even at a younger age. Also wild caught Oscars seem to have a more defined 'eye' on the base of the tail.
