I have a yoyo loach that is about 5 inches long. Not sure of his age, but he is a bit of a fatso. He's a very boisterous eater, wrecking plants and scaring everything in his path. 2 days ago when I fed him he went ballistic, he actually seemed to be thrashing about recklessly and flipping from side to side, he calmed down after about 5 mins totally worn out but ok...not nice to watch! He did it again last night after feeding and so did my bristlenose! It’s starting to worry me. I am feeding a variety of food, eg tropical flake, algae wafers, brine shrimp, shelled peas, dried bloodworms, live mosquito larvae and sinking wafers, not all at once though, maybe a combo of 3 to accommodate everyone. They are in a 170ltr tank with - tetras, rummynose, glass cats, upside down cat, dwarf gouramis and rc shrimp. The water parameters are PH 7.5, Am - 0, Nitrite - 0, nitrate - 5ppm. Weekly 30% water changes with tank water which, when it goes in is about PH 6.4....but doesn’t change the tank PH much, maybe .1 or .2. This weekend gone we did a 50% change as the nitrates were about to exceed 40ppm, we also added Macropore which brought the nitrates down well. Because of the larger change the PH did change quite a bit to 7.0, (won’t do that again) but all seemed to cope ok. Temp was the same. Can anyone enlighten me? I will try and catch it on vid tonight if it happens again.

Sounds like you are doing everything right in terms of tank maitenance and your parameters are fine... Is it only after feeding that this happens?

Is it rubbing itself against the gravel kind of like scrathing itself? Check its gills and body for anything strange.

Botia are pretty random creatures and do weird stuff though

I have 4 yoyo loaches. They are just weird man. They do weird things all the time. Sometimes mine form a conga-line and go around the tank together. Mine go weird after they eat a bunch of snails? does your tank have snails?

When you say fat could it be a gravid female? If so they get kinda aggressive when they are gravid and do a lot of what looks to be itching.

It sort of flicks itself sideways in the gravel more so than rub.....the Bristlenose was doing it too last night, basically just after they had been fed. I haven't noticed it at any other time. I did see the female dwarf Gourami flicking herself against a java fern about a week ago, but haven't seen her do it since. This has all been since we introduced 3 new glass cats into the tank a couple of weeks ago so maybe they brought something in? they seem ok tho. I can't see anything on any of them, are parasites easily visible, my eyes aren't that great. Don't know what sex the loach is, but we have had it for about 3 months so probably not gravid. Hopefully not ice @ Plecosam lol....although that would explain a lot!!

No snails in the tank either...

Here are a couple of pics.....you can see his big belly in these photos, does that look normal? I can't seem to see any parasites but like I said my eyes aren't great. Can anyone tell me if he is a boy or a girl?

I just looked back on some earlier photos taken on 23rd Feb, his tummy was probably about half the size, but still definitely bigger than it should be. He is now quarantined with a dose of epsom salts & no food. I googled 'gravid female' images today & saw some pics that looked exactly like mine, I didn't realize that they could still produce eggs like that without a male, so maybe that is a possibility!

I'm also considering internal parasites.....I do have a neon tetra & a rummy nose that are also a bit fat looking & they were purchased with the loach, they aren't doing anything weird though.

Ok, so it's now been 7 days that the loach has been quarantined (8 days without food) on advice given, I added another teaspoon of epsom salts on Tuesday. As of yesterday I would say his stomach has reduced by about 40%.

I gave him some shelled pea yesterday & I have not seen any more 'flashing'......We're going away for the weekend for our 20th wedding anniversary, so not sure what to do.... how much longer can he go without food & should I keep him in QT til we get back? the water parameters are all still good. Please help, I was getting advice from none but he/she seems to have dissappeared into cyberspace???

Well after 2 weeks I'm happy to say the Loach is doing much better. It appears that he was just grossly overweight! He has now slimmed right down after a week long fast & then a diet of green shelled pea every second day alternating with 1/2 a sinking wafer. He is now back in the big tank with his mates, the flashing has stopped completely & as you can see by the video attached he is now a handsome, slim dude once again! Note to self....do not overfeed the fish!!
