Hexamita: Fish Hole in the Head Disease

Treatment

The prime medication used to treat hexamitiasis is metronidazole.

You can occasionally buy it online or in a LFS if you are lucky to stumble across it, but most often you can only buy it from a vet as it's a prescription medication. You can try phoning a vet and asking if you can email photo's of the affected fish and a description of the symptoms instead of taking the fish in.

If it is not HITH, then it may just be damage from scraping itself on something in the tank. In which case, I usually treat with home made IAL tea and daily water changes and substrate vacuums (which may not easy to do in a planted tank, so I would settle for daily water changes).

If it's just a scratch or knock, sure.

I am not knowledgeable about HITH at all (best to do some reading yourself), but from my understanding poor water quality is big reason for it occurring. I do not know if improving water quality will help clear it up, or if it is one of those bacteria that require medication to treat it.
