Geophagus surinamensis Question

Recommended Posts

Have to agree with Smicko, sounds like Brachybranchus to me who knows what the others may be, need pics to get some idea of others. I live here in Ipswich not far from you and could call in and have a look if you are open to that.

Unfortunately there is a few species that wholesalers, shops and people in general call surinimensis.

As aquatic7 said pics would help but they may be a bit small to tell as yet.

I have bought brachybranchus, Rio branco and altifrons that were all sold as surinimensis, I'm sure there's others that are mislabelled as well.

ok so after spending an hour looking at them the slightly larger of the 3 has his throat starting to darken. So does that mean the throat colouring happens once they mature?

got my tape out the black throated one is about 13 cm the other three are about 10 cm

The dominant one will show the black first and the others may not until larger. If you take the biggest one out the others will start chasing and flaring at each other to work out a pecking order. They will show the black whilst this is happening.
