aquaholic99
I was set for a 3-4 month trip this year but had to put it off. Dry season is the best time for fish collectors and November is right on the shoulder of the wet... depending on which part of the Amazon.

pk333
You can catch or collect then have the fish sent home with you ? You would have to know the right people with the right contacts. The easiest way would be to ship them to a transshipper in Malaysia or Thailand who could do the required paperwork on that end, and have them brought into Aus by a local importer who has a quarantine room. Now I've been told that it would cost about $1500 to rent a 3 foot tank in a quarantine room for the two weeks necessary and for a local importer to do all the required paper work (and I'm assuming cover the AQIS inspection fees on arrival and to be released from quarantine). pk333
Yeah I forgot to mention they'd have to be fish on the allowable import list.
thatsright99
Talk about sugar coating... You have to keep the fish alive when u catch them, you have to get them out of Brazil, you'd have to get them out of America, you have to get them to an Australian approved holding facilities somewhere in Asia, pay the quarantine costs there (1-2 weeks ect) all other paperwork, feeding, general care ect ect. Then there's the aqis inspection and fees here plus another 1-2 wk quarantine and associated cost. And there's no guarantee that the fish will survive at any part of the trip, not to mention even here in the q room. ....... That price for a 3ft tank is cr @ p for quarantine is ridiculous. That'd b if that one tank held up the whole room or section for the period, but its still friggen expensive !
aqc247
Nice comments guys - but just collecting digital fish to bring home lol. The others on the party have the required collecting / exporting permits and do not reside here. aqh99 - I was set for a 3-4 month trip this year but had to put it off. Agreed with the dry months. Amazon is as a side trip since will be on the continent already >>main trip is Uruguay where the organiser wanted clear water for photography So really there are two possible trips to join. Hi Ian, I was planning a very serious fish trip. The plan was to buy a used van and live - drive - camp from it around the country until we ran out of money or intetesting places to see. Had to delay this because the other fish nut i was going with couldn't make it. If you are photographing fish, the best way is a small photo tank as Dr Herbert Axelrod used to. If you want to video underwater then you might not get to as many good fishing spots. Plenty of ways to bring fish back but I'm looking forward to eating wild discus, pacu, TSN and plecos. Re-charging batteries will be the key .... Yes looking fwd to eating local catches and bbqs Edited August 16, 2015 by aqc247
thatsright99
Discus a good batter coating and eat them Like a biscuit and the plecos r nice deep fried. Plus whatever herbs, spices or local fruits cooked with whichever fish. Give some of what u catch to the locals, they'll love you for it. A good waterproof camera or video will be a good thing.
