New 65g Discus Tank

Recommended Posts

I thought i would update you on my Tank redo. I have decided to go with discus, tetras and siamese algae eaters. The tank is 4ftL x 1.5H x 1.5ftW and is running an aqua one 1500 canister filter and a 300watt heater. I have the cycled water ready to go in tomorrow and i am picking up the rest of the driftwood, substrate and plants tomorrow. I will keep everyone updated on the progress.

Just a word on the cycled water.

When we cycle a tank, we are in effect cycling the filter or sump as that is where the vast majority of nitrifying bacteria live. There are very little bacteria in the water. I would be very careful adding fish to a tank where you've just added water from an existing tank, with out actually cycling the filter fully.

Your best bet would be to add filter media from an already established filter in to your new filter.

Im shutting down another tank, im am using that filter and water and putting it in this tank. the hoses are only there because the other ones will be two short. I am experienced with discus :D but thanks for the tips.

Hi harrison.c

What happened to the discus? Who/where are you buying from?

The Coast is home to the best Discus LFS in Queensland, Living Reef Aquarium. There is a very good private seller down there as well, his face book page is Gold Coast Discus.

I'm not sure what the plants are in your aquarium, but the one in the back right corner, I'm not sure if it's a true aquatic plant.

How were they sent to you? I've only ever heard of discus shipped via couriers, and haven't heard of people having problems.

Unless you're buying a proven breeding pair, two is not a recommended number purchase. Usually 5 or more is the recommended number.

The one in the right corner is an aluminium plant and its not a true aquatic

ok thanks i will keep an eye on it and if it affects the water i will remove it

Ive had them in community tanks and they last a while but eventually they all died but that could have been my fault as my knowledge of plant requirements wasnt the best
