Weight of tank......

Recommended Posts

Ok, so the time has come for me to prepare to fill my new tank with water and I want to know what I should support the floor with to stop it disappearing through the floor.

I am looking to put it against the wall across about approx. 10 beams and against an outside 9" block wall.

I was thinking a couple of 100 x 100mm hardwood posts, with another 100 x 100 across the top between the posts. But thinking I might have to use steel props or something like that.

There is a garage below, so could just grab a steel beam and jack a couple of steel acro props up underneath each end and just lave them there...... doesn't need to look good

Tank will be sitting on 10 Ft x 2 ft cabinet which has continuous timber support round base.

Estimated total weight of tank 1.6t (1600kgs) so we are talking heavy.

Anyone have any advise without me going and finding a structural engineer and taking out a small mortgage to pay him

Depends in how old the house is. And if there's wood rot or not. When you say continuous wooden base.. is that a board like the stupid dalbard cabinates that have a chipboard base ?? Something like that wood b great for weight distribution. ( but sooner or later will F.up from getting wet ) have a look at the joists ect under the house and see what's what. Support on the block wall would be great, then measure 50-55cm out and see what beams or joists are running along there and the span from the wall to the next parallel 'support' and go from there.

Calculate Aquarium Glass Thickness - Custom tanks are great investments | Aquarium Tools

use this to work out the weight of the glass and when its filled it wont give u a weight for rocks filters substrait or the likes but it will give u an idea of the filled tanks weight

it wont work using a phone or ipad u will need to use it on a lappy or pc
