grubby
Ok, on the weekend I cleared out my last Cichlid tank and passed the subjects off to a mate. The tank has been somewhat neglected and was severely affected by algae and had a large colony of Malaysian trumpet snails in it. I decided to just deal with the Snails with a good does of chlorine Bleach before I stripped it down the next day. Got up this morning and the tank is gleaming (surprise surprise), I will still strip this tank down and re-seed it before I use it again. The question is in theory if I was to now bomb this tank with say prime or swimming pool chlorine Neutraliser, could I simply reseed the filter and start again with fish and not have to strip it down. I won't do this of course I am just posing the question having never chlorine bombed a tank before, its not something I have ever tried.
tutters187
I would drain out and rinse and drain out a couple times with neutralised water just to be safe. Chlorine is safe after it has been rinsed out. Maybe double dose neutraliser
grubby
Thanks, that was how I was thinking. Bloody sparkling clean though I bet the MTS are still alive too.
pony-tail
I would be surprised if all of the MTS are dead but you should get a decently high kill rate and just a few straglers left alive quite often at the waterline - Advice - net out any you see they may look dead only to open up when the water has been neutralizes . Jayden Cats
I've had MTS come back to life after being dried out in gravel for a couple of months but have never tried chlorine on them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Alasse
They don't like gravel left to soak in straight white vinegar either
grubby
The dam things are everywhere, every LFS you go into has them. I never saw them 20 years ago, infact snails of any description where never an issue. Now they are.
Lictoga
Only effective thing iv used is copper sulphate. Enought to turn the water deep blue
saczel
I have done a pretty strong bleach clean before and rinsed the hell out of it for weeks after because i could still smell the bleach. I never thought of neutralizing it but i would still rinse it out heaps, at least once everyday for a week and then try the dechlorinator at least double dose and let it run through the filter for a week and redo before even thinking about adding even a comet or two to see what happens. If the comets live after a few weeks all is probably good. I had a fairly toxic mix that gave me chemical burns, rubber gloves are handy.
tutters187
Chlorine should do the job - it kills everything else Malaysian Terrorist Snails lol

xysti53
MTS will survive being in chlorine bombed tanks for well over four weeks. Last Christmas I bombed a system with just over 1000ltrs of water, with over 10ltrs of straight pool chlorine and four weeks later the snails were still alive. Problem solved take gravel out, bomb tanks and put in new gravel.
