Dwarf cichlids and plants in Brisbane?

Recommended Posts

So a couple of years back I was big into Dwarf Cichlids and planted tanks, and I'm thinking of getting into it again; I always used to go to Fishchick Aquatics in Annerley, since it was a great little place for that kind of stuff, but looking around there these days its very sparse in the dwarf department, plant selection is pretty thin too compared to what I remember.

Is there anywhere worth going to these days specifically for these sorts of things?

For rare plants try Liverpool creek or aquagreen.

Dwarf americans are another story, they are a bit harder to find but they are around.

I acquired a pair of ivanacara adoketa that I'm hoping will breed soon but they are getting old so they may not.

Cheers mick

OK - I am setting up my tanks for apistos again. Maybe we should get a little group going. The reality of fish keeping is that if one person stock a fish, all we need is one disaster to wipe a species. Maybe we should get a little apisto group going @Rod @Daydream @pk33 Iwannabreedfdiscusbutreallylikedwarfs

I'm in. But I am only after one species.

Is regani still breeding? Pretty sure he can hook you up with whatever you're looking for.

Im pretty sure regani no longer keeps apistos.

cblaxall is a keen apisto keeper and breeder.

Pretty sure the agassizzi 'Tefe' were recently on the aquarium industries list of apistos. (a couple months back). Not sure if they still are though...

EDIT: Just checked and yep still on the list. Speak to your LFS :)

I have some macmasterei, macmasterei gold and inka50 juveniles that will be ready in the upcoming weeks. Also some ttifasciatum, borellii and borrellii opal fry, but they will be a good few months away. PM me if anyone wants some when they're ready and I'll stick you on the list.

Thanks @s1l3nt. I really like to pick and chose my stock and the thought of saying "thanks, but they're not to the standard I am looking for" leaves a bad taste in my month.

I hear you completely :) However, I must say I have seen good stock come from AI personally. Albeit I have really only purchased "wild" stock from them. But quality has been solid in my opinion. But yes I do agree that most breeders will have top quality stock :)

P.S - A lot of decent LFS actually bring in more than the amount you want, so you get to pick and choose a little bit.

I agree with you ginger. It is quite hard for us to get rare species here, I remember the first pair of apistogramma elizabathae I received "blind", 4 poor fish and 2 looked okay. Now can't even find them, and the one time I saw them again they were $250 a fish.... In all honesty, I have not had issues with AI and its quality (albeit I mostly buy wild caught apistos as the common species they have, I have already kept or am not chasing).

P.s. if you know someone in Melbourne, you can get them to check out the stock at AI I believe... Maybe even pick you out some fish haha.

I also think a part of the issue for apistos (and other fish that are part of a more niche section of our hobby) is that the people who keep them are either not willing to ship them, or ship via expensive methods so the species does not get spread around too much. This sadly means that if this person loses or sells their pair the species disappears from the country pretty much.
