First time keeping serious fish

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I am new to owning an aquarium, so far i had cycled my tank and i have introduced 2 new fish, a Red Terror cichlid, aswell as a Oscar cichlid. Orignally they were in my first tank which is a 2.5ft (90L) and i was getting some advice from my cousin, knowing i had to upgrade tanks to keep them about 4 days after getting these fish i had gotten a 4ftx2ftx2ft and it holds 450 liters, i was just wondering if it is safe to keep these 2 fish in the same tank? i have some terracotta pots for them to use as protection, at first the RT would nip at my oscar, but since changing to my new tank (2 days ago) it seems he hasnt been attacking him. but im not so sure if i can keep them in the same tank especially when they get bigger.

My RT is almost always hiding under his pot but recently started coming out, and everytime i feed them my oscar will eat rarely with me watching, and my RT never seems to eat, i leave floating pellets in there at night and morning but im never sure if he eats, i have tried sinking pellets but he doesnt even go for them just watches them sink, is there anything wrong? or are they still frightened after moving?

Thanks,

Travis

They are likely just still a little shocked after moving. You may need a bigger tank though as they end up attacking each other. If that happens you have three options.

1. Sell one of them.

2. Get another tank ( the same size ) and separate them.

3. Get a bigger tank about 5ft would suit them.

Or you could get lucky and they might end up settling down either accepting the other fish or ignoring each other.

Good luck!

i have been closely Monitoring them and they aggression has died down alot since moving into this tank, the oscar is now swimming freely and exploring rather than hiding next to the filter all the time. For now i will take my chances with letting them settle in and if it worsens in the coming weeks, ill decide on either selling my Red Terror, and moving some more fish in with my Oscar, or selling my Oscar and pushing my luck to buy another RT hoping its a male and try breed them.
