Moving a large aquarium

Recommended Posts

Just my own experiences but Hector the Erector was unable to lift a 4m tank up one flight of stairs for me. Turned up with his work crew, assessed the situation and then left me and the tank high and dry as his crane didn't have access through the roof.

I would recommend George Sommer Removals. He has a team of extremely beefy weight lifters who can lift iron safe's, pianos, commercial ovens and other heavy items the old fashioned way. My tank was about 2 tonne and wasn't an issue.

The move should be straight forward enough. Ill give both a call and go from there. Thanks for the reply

I've heard mini movers will send some big kiwi boys to move large tanks, i would make sure they have insurance first. My old workplace gets alot work due to the incompetence of mini movers.

I would attempt to hire some glass suction cup handles to make it easier but make sure they are rated to the weight, that's a huge tank.

Cheers mick

My plan was to just slide it on and off one of these..

That way it wouldn't need to be lifted.

I'm just worried about it dropping and breaking or injuring someone. I imagine it would do a lot of damage and I'm not sure if I'm willing to take the risk.

This is just a suggestion, i saw it done on a program where they wanted to move a steel cabin on a ship which had been cut off and it weighed tons. I have used this method to slide large tanks successfully and smaller tanks still with water and fish in. lgw if you have confidence in the scissor lift then this should work, believe it or not you just have to get some banana skins under the tank (inside skin side against glass) and it will slide so easy it is almost unbelievable. Let me know how you go if you use this method, good luck.

If it's a straight forward move (no stairs or sharp corners) you should consider a car jack to lift tank and stand together, one end at a time and sliding a platform trolley under each leg. Then wheel into place and reverse.

If you need to lift, I would use staggered height supports, lifting just one end up (or down ) to next height slowly. The same method as jacking up a house.

You dont ever need to take whole weight of the tank when lifting one side up (or down) to next heught. The scissor lift isn't stable enough for what your suggesting. They are good for smaller tanks (8 x 2 x2 tanks ) though.
