gingerbeer
My 3 wild caughts were behaving fine together. They would school close together, until today. Now he has plants to play with and a wild betta to eat (as only tank with water parameters). Bugger!

aquaholic99
Breed them through egg crate... it's a fallacy that american's pair up (once breeding season is over) and artificial glass tanks aren't big enough to let them behave naturally. It's a real bummer when you desperately need a fish but don't have the tank space and buy it anyway. I know where you are coming from.
gingerbeer
I do not have spare tanks - PROBLEM! Once I know I have a pair, the spare will have to go. I actually thought when I moved him he was done for...... Edited October 23, 2015 by gingerbeer

aquaholic99
Keeping a single pair is also a recipe for disaster unless you have a lot of escape refuges (out of line of sight) or very large tanks. Or go the other way and over crowd them. I know you have lots of experience so just posting for others. There is nothing wrong with breeding through a divider. I've had american cichlids spawn successfully through a canister filter - female laid eggs at filter outflow on opposite side of tank to male. This pond was full of red devils, a lot lot more than the photo shows.
gingerbeer
Is that an oscar?Sorry can't tell cause he's so beat up lol He is an oscar, wild caught. I consider oscars quite gentle, for a cichlid. I have read wild caughts can be a lot more agressive, just failed to take note..... Rookie mistake.
