TheAquaHolic001
So in 2 and a half weeks my 6ft 600L tank has evaporated an estimated 75L's. Light source is only a temporary solution as it is only suited for a 4ft tank so it can't really be a problem I would think. Any ideas? Filter is a 5500lph canister (with uv steriliser). (Edit) lights are 9 volt. If you need any extra info let me know. Also original water line is about 7-8cm above what it is now
Cam07
Ideas on what? I'd guess and say that level would be about right with no lids
Schmitee
Hey mate, I haven't had experience with a 6 footer so I couldn't tell you what a normal evaporation rate would be, but a couple things to consider: 1. surface agitation - if the output of your filter is above the water level/creates a lot of surface movement, this increases the evaporation, so it's a good idea to move it lower or possibly point it slightly downwards 2. lids - if the tank is completely enclosed, there will be 0 water loss, having the lids almost covering the tank will reduce evaporation drastically 3. type of light - I know you said it's only a 4 ft light, but depending on the heat it gives off, it can be a big factor (if it's really hot, then you'll lose a lot of water) 4. floating plants - I've got a 4ft which is basically covered in duckweed so I lose maybe 1cm in 2-3 weeks (the tank also has full lids, slight surface agitation and LED 'fluoro' tubes) hope that helps, Schmitee

yellows
That explains it mate your tanks on it's side the water will be just running out, don't you love sideways pictures LOL. On a serious note having no lids wouldn't be helping

Netto14
It sounds like a lot, however as already mentioned there can be various factors at play here. Perhaps fill the tank back up, Mark the water level and then measure it again after a week. With our 6ft we can lose at least 9Lts a day, sometimes double if the protein skimmer (for a marine tank) goes into overdrive. Another thing to consider is if the tank is near aircon. Closest air con is inside, so can't be that but it is in my garage and the door is opened a bit. I'm going to fully fill it up tomorrow so I'll see how it goes. Netto14
As already mentioned light could be an issue, not just the strength/colour spectrum...but also the amount of time lights are on. Or even any other light source. If there's no aircon in the immediate area, you can safely rule that out. A breeze or airflow from the garage door being open could have a similar effect. If you're really concerned you could simulate a bucket test for evaporation next to the tank, but honestly I think that may be more effort than it's worth. I'm pretty sure you'll find it's evaporation. Remember it has gotten warmer recently.
