How to get goldfish to breed in pond???

Recommended Posts

In my experience they have been quite difficult to breed without hand breeding them (which I disapprove of) you might get some fry if you let them go though. I'm not very knowledgable on goldfish but there goldfish people here so you should get some better answers

Someone's telling you porkies theaquaholic.. big fat mofo porkies ! They breed easily enough in even a 2ft tank when they're the length of your hand...

Its generally the wrong time of year to breed them as they usually love to breed coming into winter...

But with the more common ones they should be able to breed more than just then. Some of the more genetically deformed types might be harder to breed..?

If you want numbers of goldfish to survive you'll need a lot of bunches of plant (elodea) was a fav for the eggs to be laid on and atleast a couple of tanks for the fry ect

But you also have to see if you have male and female, if they're ready to breed or not and a few other things. How big are your goldfish ?

Theaqua... being bred like that is what you'll find in china mainly (some certain people have recently started doing it to goldies as well as a few other surprising species in Asia ) where the Chinese sell 100000's and also breeding regimes to find diff mutations from a very high surviving % of fry.. the use of a couple different Hormones is used to get max eggs from the girls and to a degree the males (for sperm) too. One of the ways they get the males sperm to fertilize those eggs...no male on here wants to know about ;)

have to disagree with goldfish usually breeding coming into winter, spring is the main breeding period, coinciding with an increase in temperature and daylength as well as plankton blooms, increased food etc, i'd be surprised if your goldfish haven't already breed in the pond this spring, but yes they can spawn anytime over the warmer parts of the year. you can check at daylight for spawning activity, observe any chasing going on the male will chase and nudge the female especially around the vent area, look for white spots on the gill plates of males these both mean at least the males are wanting to spawn. and you can always catch your fish and rub their bellies carefully if their if they are in peak spawning condition sperm and eggs should be released with a gentle touch, if you think your hurting your fish they aren't ready to spawn just yet. and of course you can regularly check your weeds for eggs.

how big is your pond? and how long have your fish been in there? (ie. have they been there for years but haven't breed) maybe your pond is to small or open to allow juvies and eggs to survive with the amount of adults you have in there, but usually there would be some survivors). anyway other options you have are removal of eggs on weed or spawning mops from main pond and raise separately, setting up a spawning tank ie. a large tub with fresh water and spawning mops (ie I used spawning mops in an ibc last year) and place a pair in there for a few days and watch for eggs, then remove parents and raise fry in the spawning tub (if large enough), if they don't spawn you can put the adults back in the pond for a week or two to try again, and of course you can always hand spawn.

anyway best of luck

cheers

Personal info, some people can't breed fish I think are as easy as putting butter on bread.

anyway a bit of light reading

http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/breeding-fs.htm

Bill Ramsden is a leading fishkeeper and breeder who has judged at all major shows throughout the Country for many years. He is a founder member of the Northern Goldfish and Pondkeepers Society (1959) and has been President of the Society for the past 30 years. He is also Chairman of the Nationwide Goldfish Standards of Great Britain Committee.

plenty of info out there, just look past the yahoo answers and wiki facts etc and try and find something with a bit of credibility.

not entirely suited to your needs but there is good info in there.

If you are keeping goldfish outdoors they will pretty much breed from the beginning of spring until autumn(even random small spawns on unusually warm days in winter)but naturally depends on the conditioning of the fish, enviroment factors, etc but from my experience a female could give you 2-3 spawns in this time with the first spawn generally the biggest....goldfish are egg scatterers so require a decent amount of plants or mops to scatter the eggs on..they will still drop spawns without plants etc but I find they become a bit reluctant without the plants etc to catch their eggs... Generally speaking work off a 2 males to 1 female ratio as the boys will chase and harass the female to induce spawning and their milt will fertilize the eggs in the water..2 boys is better as a female can scatter thousands of eggs and for the best chance of fertilizing all the eggs 2 boys are best...big water changes and summer storms(air pressure, temp changes)also create spawns quite regularly...spawning takes place with the early morning sun rise and you can check your pond early in the morning to catch the action..as mentioned elodea is one of the best egg catching plants...if you want to really raise decent numbers of babies remove these plants(or spawning mops) after spawning and raise seperately with water from the pond as parents will eat both eggs and babies...good luck
