Lippa
Thought I'd share my nitrate test, its been 4 months since water change. 600lt tank with 3 frontosa 3 petricoli 3 Julie's and around 20 brichardi and a sailfin pleco. i have about 10 lts of marine pure in the filter plus some mr Aqua noodles and about 1lt matrix. cheers Bryan
yellows
Is this wright your saying you haven't done a water change in 4 months because of marine pure if that's the case I will be placing an order with The Tech Den asap

yellows
Dam there are so many question you could ask here, what filter are you running, how often do you feed, what size tank etc
Stoney
I have at least 20 lts of marine pure, 40 lts of K1, heaps of matrix, bags of coral, bio balls, different densities of foam, all in a 6ft sump, and I'm doing 50% water changes every week to keep the nitrates down to around 20. Go figure. Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk
Wogboy
Haha, marine pure, jeez 10litres would cost some coin.
danfishy84
Mileage will vary depending on your oxygen levels for de-nitrification and bio load. In saying that, I don't generally play around with de-nitrification. Nitrate in my opinion is not the only reason to change water, I like to use it as a water change indicator which tells me when to reduce my level of various nasties of which Nitrate is included. Don't forget your fish would surely appreciate trace elements every now and then.
mbunamad
I am a believer in huge volume water changes. You can use all the latest and greatest filter media you like [not a dig at filter media] but the same water stays in your system. You just cant beat fresh water. JMO. Stoney
Water change for the win imho. It also makes my fish horny Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk
Lofties
Nitrate levels have nothing to do with marine pure or any other form of bio media. Low nitrate levels depend upon how heavily stocked your tank is, how much and how often you feed, how often you water change, etc. If I've learnt anything on this forum, that's what I've learnt. All the long term/old timers in the hobby preach this. Listen to these guys^^^
th3f0rg0t3n
small fish = small bio load though , its possible BUT are you shaking test 2 for the nitrate for the full 30 seconds + before adding the drops too vial ? one of my single fish would eat poop & pee more nitrate in a day , let alone 4months & i use atleast 5+ litres of marine pure per tank. if the nitrates stay below 40ppm , im a happy man with no stress. love the results though mate, maybe post a few pictures of your tank / filtration if you can be bothered ? Lippa
Just re-tested shook the bejesus outta the bottles same result fish are fed morning at night around 8 algae wafers daily plus three good pinches of NLS chiclid pellets ocean nutrition lobster eggs and mysysis shrimp on alternate days. wasnt my intention to go 4 months, ive just had a particular busy year. and ideally i like to WC evry fortnight, i guess my reason for posting was to show that this media does what it claims a somehow works on nitrates too. pics to come
Delapool
Thanks for the post Did you have to slow water flow down to get denitrification to be more efficient? Just curious if you did any testing along the way on this.
Wogboy
The dog looks impressed! I have marine pure blocks and they do not reduce my nitrates much at all, this was in my 6 foot tank, had roughly 28 fish in there though, medium sized haps. Yes bio load has a lot to do with nitrate levels, but also agree that water changes trump denitrification in almost all cases, not that other forms do not work. litigator666
i have a few packs of marine pure on my cannisters - cubes, spheres, and BIG blocks and I never been lucky enough to get a "yellow" result. Best result on my test kit was 5-10 ppm. even have hydra streams. pothos and bakkis on my top filter and a twice a week 25% water change. Would love to get it to zero but seems impossible in my tank. FORGOT, I was also spending some money on purigen/macropore. All that I can read about stuff that can aid the tank to be in check - i try to sample and use them... Lippa
I am the lazy aquarist! My tank runs a weir either side Of the tank I get the same sorta Media volume you'd get from a 3 foot sump. Tanks has 2 max. 2000l/h pumps to run the weirs Nothing deliberate done to slow the flow

Donny@ageofaquariums
Sand and texas are likely contributing. Also, and this is something from the dark ages.... the water behind back ground may be causing a plenum effect.

Also, and this is something from the dark ages.... the water behind back ground may be causing a plenum effect. So you think the background could be producing low flow anaerobic conditions or could it be heterotrophic bacteria going to town on the built up organic carbon behind the wall? ageofaquariums
So you think the background could be producing low flow anaerobic conditions yep. Its like a side plenum. Which I have never seen before. Bit of an unknown, but I do like to complicate things where possible.
