Joshwd
Hi guys I have 2 common bn and a sailfin plec. We don't have any zucchini atm and they look hungry. TheAquaHolic001
Hi guys I have 2 common bn and a sailfin plec. We don't have any zucchini atm and they look hungry. Is it safe to put some big pieces of lettuce in with them if I wash it well? Thank you! Just get a couple of pieces of lettuce (any size) and get a fork and sterilise it in boiling water attach a string to it and put the lettuce on the fork and lower it in around the middle of the tank, they most likely won't eat during the day as they are mainly nocturnal but if you think that they don't eat on the first day you can leave it in there for 2-3 days but no longer or it will go rotten. When your done just take pull it out. I always feed my BN this + algae wafers and they love it. You can also your other veges but some can cloudy your water. Also I don't think you need to wash the lettuce you may but I don't and don't see a difference. Joshwd
Thanks so much guys. I'll try a little carrot and boil a little lettuce and see what they like more
DeBree420
I'm confused as to why you would need string? I'm pretty sure there is a great post about what vegies are a hit and what ones are not maybe in the catfish specific section
smicko
String is so you don't get wet hands retrieving the fork. There is alot of veges that bn can eat but some are better than others. For instance Courgette is like steroids for small bn Pumpkin can make peppermints have orange spots and albinos to look golden instead of white. Some foods rot away quicker than others but don't leave any in for longer 24 hours and waterchange twice weekly to keep water quality up. DeBree420
Why would you not want to get your arm wet? I always found it therapeutic messing around in fishtanks

I always found it therapeutic messing around in fishtanks In case you have something on your hand/arm that could be harmful to your fish like sunscreen or soap. It is not totally nesescary though. PlecFan
Why would you not want to get your arm wet? I always found it therapeutic messing around in fishtanks My partner honestly believes I have an ocd addiction with putting my hands in fish tanks lol he bought me a heap of long handled tongs so I didn't "have" to get my hands wet .... I hid the tongs and blamed the kids lol
garywant87
I think he meant to boil the water to sterilise the fork not boil the lettuce lol. I have found my bn love the waffers and prefer zuccini over carrot over cucumber. I cut the washed carrot into either disc or lengthways the use a wood skewer to mount them on an drop in the tank. When the skewer floats , generally all is nearly gone anyway, I remove it and whats left. My albinon bn are currently turning red.

aquaholic99
String is a great idea. I've been draining the tank out each time to stop my hands getting wet. I might look into some tongs too.
