Lictoga
Hey guys I'm looking at getting a new tank made up. And was thinking about having the canister filter inlets and out lets going through bulkheads. Reason being I have some spiny eels that have a escape tendency and gaps around the lids are a issue. i will be using the ehime disconnect valves to seperate the canister from plumbing has anyone done this before of can anyone see any problems. litigator666
Why not have holes drilled on the topglass to get the inlet and outlet tube in? Bulkhead to the normal eheim hoses will cost you with the adaptors/reducers needed for customisation. pony-tail
I have done this with a Fluval 305 on a 5ft . I had to make up an inlet out of bits from a hardware shop that fitted bulkheads and made a spray bar by drilling up a black plastic tube with threads both ends that came from the same shop . Worked as well as having a normal hose set up . The reason for the need for a pickup pipe was that the tank was pre drilled and setup for the bulkheads to run as an overflow so I just worked with it the way it was . joller
im surprised this inst the norm tbh, especially in fancy planted tanks
Grubs
My 6ft planted tank has 4x 28mm holes though the bottom (2 each end) for inlet and outlet to eheim 2217 canisters that sit under the tank in the cabinet. This gives a tidy look with no pipes coming up and over the edge of the tank. I put a ball valve on each 20mm bulkhead under the tank for emergency shut-off in addition to the eheim taps on the filter hoses. I used Hansen 20mm bulkheads with the big flat (ribbed) sealing washers for a leak proof seal. My inlet strainers are actually below the substrate height and its worked out really well. ... of course if the bulkheads ever fail my tank will drain.. but they shouldn't (*touch wood*). Lictoga
How are you conecting the canister hose to the bulk head? Barbed fitting and hose clamps? Sent from my SM-J100Y using Tapatalk
coffee
very well done i think
aquaholic99
You can go through base if you use double taps.
Lictoga
I will be going through the back not the base
aquaholic99
Going through the back or base is the same. You will need to exclude air if you are using a canister. The ehime pro series have beautiful disconnect taps. Off topic but I induced some spines eels last year. Eggs were bright green!
Lictoga
Thats cool Winston. Did you use hormone injections? Was it just the peacock spiny or one of the other's? I will have a ballvalve on the inlet and outlet incase i ever need to change filters or one of the ehime taps fail.
Grubs
How are you conecting the canister hose to the bulk head? Barbed fitting and hose clamps? Yes. 19mm poly barbs. The bulkhead has a 20mm (3/4") thread. 20mm ball valve screwed onto the bulkhead thread. 20mm threaded poly nipple screwed into the open end of the ball valve (with tape). I then use 19mm barbed poly 20mm nut and tails which has the rubber washer to seal against the nipple end surface. This allows me to easily unscrew the entire hose if needed. The 16/22mm eheim hose is a very tight fit on the 19mm barbs after heating in hot water and I don't use a hose clamp but you certainly could. I find the poly barbs in the 19mm irrigation fittings are so sharp they cut into the eheim hose enough that they can't be pulled out without cutting the hose. I then put the regular eheim double tap into the hose also which is what I use when cleaning the filter. So even though I used a nut and tail on the end of the hose I never unscrew it from the bulkhead.. its just forward planning for flexibility should I want to change it up. As indicated the ball valve is just insurance. Edited December 30, 2015 by Grubs
