Slim line Tank Project

Recommended Posts

So after purchasing the tank from inkevnito. i now have a project to work on.

1480mm x 170mm x 850mm

Hopefully plan on stocking it with rainbowfish but im not sure which ones yet. going to try for the smaller type so they dont have issues with the slimness of the tank, maybe Pygmy Rainbowfish - http://rainbowfish.angfaqld.org.au/Pygmaea.htm

My plan is to use as much stuff as i have extra laying around but not trying to scrimp on the look of it. Im getting a steel stand made up for cost price from a mate and planning on wrapping it in wood/ply and painting it black.

Using Iron Sand as the substrate (already have leftover sand)

possibly a 30cm T5 fixture i already have as the light (hanging from above the tank attached from some steel welded to the stand)

need to get some lids made up for the top.

Gave it a good wash out and yeah it is very difficult to get to the bottom lol my arm isn't 85cm long.

Going to have to figure something out to clean the last little bit.

Already got the plans drawn up for the stand so should have that done in a few weeks hopefully.

And my neighbour came to the party and helped me unload it when I got home

55cm T5 light i stole off one of my spare bed heads, i am going to weld two small steel lengths from the back of the tank stand to up above the tank to hold the light. they will be about 55cms apart so if i need a bigger light the width will be fine as well as the steel will hold a fair bit of weight of any type of light.

Looks like today will be the day for spray painting the back and sides.

Got some gloss black duramax and some silver diamond finish duramax. I spotted a tank on the Internet with a black glitter sort of background and it looked sweet. So im going to give it a go on this tank.

Will post some pictures after it is done.

tank now fully painted.

stand half done.

man, cutting and welding is a very tedious process. probably still another full days work to have just the steel bit finished, then i have to work on the ply wrap for it :(

That takes time dude. patience, i got the stand hopefully being complete done this weekend and then i can give an idea on what it will end up looking like

yeah i noticed that when i got it home :(

still not sure how im going to clean the bottom part :(

Its a really interesting shape and is coming together well. Are you doing anything to ensure the tank cant topple over? e.g. tying the stand to the wall somehow? It will sit solidly of course but you wouldn't want to lose your balance while cleaning it.

I have a 1.8m x 30cm piece of pine which I'm going to attach the stand to it, this should provide enough stability from someone pulling it over. All up it would weigh around 450kg with water and substrate in it so it would take some force to move it to an angle for it to go over.

I could rig something up to be able to attach it to studs in the wall but i don't think I need to at this point
