i've got to move my tank and thinking of changing substraight from calcium carb to a sand base. because the pump is in the bottom of the fluval fx 5 filter i was wondering weather anyone had every used one of these filter with sand as a base

my main concern is the sand being sucked up through the strainer and then being drawn into the impellor and grinding this away.

Do you think this will be a issue , and can you think of way of overcoming this. i though about placing a sponge filter over the strainer to reduce intake but the bottom of the strainer is about the size of a hand so a bit to big, and it for a display tank so i dont want it looking to ugly.

thanks

chris

thanks for the input, the filter does contain alot of media but like brad said its not compact , i could easisly imagine the sand filtering through the media and getting into the pump, looks like no one else has tried this, so i dont want to be the first to chew my pump up, so i leave it as a cal carb base

thanks guys.

Have a look at a Eheim prefilter they arent the cheapest thing on earth but would probably work ok for you.

I have seen them at pet country at slacks creek and i am sure pet world at mt gravatt would stock them as well http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_AquariumP ... actor.html

I think they are a little different to this one but anyway you get the general idea that it stops all kind of good getting into the filter.
