Does anyone know if you can still purchase small fry powder foods such as golden pearls or larval fry foods in Australia. I know golden pearls were popular a few years back but seem hard to find now. I have been buying my fry starter powder online from a marine shop but postage gets expensive for 20g food as they stock only marine and coral foods.

I am looking for the very small size food ie 50-100 micron and 100-200 micron size to feed till they are big enough to take nls fry powder which is about 300 or so micron from memory.

reefculture aquapearls 100-200 µm http://www.reefculture.com.au/Aqua-Pearls-p/aqupea.htm

Sera Micron http://www.thetechden.com.au/Sera_Micron_Growth_Food_25g_50ml_p/es151.htm

I have some Otohime Hirame B2 (300-600µm) from a forum member here - was imported by Aquasonic I think - but the granules are soft and easily rub between the fingers and break up to a silky finer powder.

My personal choice is live cultures of greenwater, paramecium and infusoria.. but Sera Micron and the Otohime Hirame are convenient.

You know this seems like a perfect moment for the 500g tin of Ocean Nutrition Color, Growth & Health Formula......... but the crumble size is 0.1-0.3mm.

Good stuff though.

Which species are spawning?

I did see you now stock this is it available in a smaller size 500g is going to take my fry years to eat as they are also getting bbs, instant brine shrimp which they seem to love as much as fresh and micro worms. I only use the powder as the in between feeds in an autofeeder when I am at work to earn money to pay for all the fish stuff😬

It is for Angel fish fry I have three pairs spawning flat out at the moment.

The fish were not keen on the sera foods just let it sink and I am feeding microworms and bbs/ instant bbs in addition to the fry powder. I have purchased the reef culture stuff and the fish seem to like it but I get charged $6 postage so unless I buy a large amount it is expensive.

How do you stop the egg powder turning the water murky I have never had good luck with that. I think the fry are looking for slightly bigger food bbs size seems to work about that 100-300 micron range not sure how big egg powder is.

I have been putting a little spirulina powder in occasionally but the fry do not seem too interested.

The larval powders seem to stay in the water column longer as well with a little air stone so it mimics the live food more.

Ive been mixing Sera micron and hikari first bites in a glass of tank water and pouring it over angel fry, they looooove it, but can get messy so need to wipe the tank out often :(

Fish Food + $5 Coffee Grinder = Powder

I grind up NLS grow or Thera A works a treat, best part is you can have them used to whatever food you plan on growing them out with, just change up the pellet size or length of time ground.

I've been using the ocean nutrition stuff that aoa mentioned for a couple of weeks with african fry. They are eating it as soon as they are free swimming, maybe you could share a tin of it with someone so you don't have to use 500g.

Cheers mick

You find it in refrigerated cabinets of most large supermarkets

Coles Woolies

Best rolled into ball with spirulina and fry pick at it

can add NLS fry powder and can also mix with gelatine ;)m

great - I have been crushing flakes and guppy pellets for guppy fry. this is a nice solution.

Make sure you use very sparingly and do a water change a little while after feeding to remove all the uneaten egg as it can cloud the water quickly when it breaks down.

If I can not do a water change ie when I am leaving for work I prefer to use live micro worms or the golden pearls/ larval fry powders as they seem to be ok if uneaten till I get home to change the water.

Or....keep MTS with fry....to eat uneaten food

With guppies using straight powder is best

It floats....and guppies are designed to eat film off water surface ;)

@Grubs Would you mind sharing your otohime source or passing my details to them as I would be interested in trying this with my angel fry.

@aussieorchid - I want to get some more also so have put out some feelers. Will keep you in the loop.  Aquasonics "platinum" range seems to be Otohime Hirame repackaged. e.g. this http://shop.aquasonic.com.au/PFF1S/Platinum-Fish-Food-1mm-15gm/pd.php but they don't seem to carry less than 1mm  (but it crumbles so easily between your fingers it may not matter).
