Giant Pink Gourami – Billabong Bayou

EPS Pallet Day !

Only a month in the planning, but "EPS Pallet Day" arrived today!

As noted above - they were bigger than I thought. I really should read the online catalogues properly and not just zip thru them! They did say 1160 x 1160 x 140 - which I took to be about 3ft by 3ft - bad conversion there - should have been 3.5ft by 3.5ft - oh well.

Obviously I'm not going to squeeze 14 of these into a mid-sized 4WD, so luckily a truck was heading in my direction!

Here they are sitting in the carport (No, they are not 1.16m by 2.32m - it was just me being tidy and stacking them neatly!).

And last, but not least, the "Wile E. Coyote" plan for pallet deployment in the Billabong.

(Please note: May be subject to Grover's last-minute change of plan or adjustment because this is all designed in his head and built with the best jury-rigged adaptations.)

More updates & photos during the weekend deployment !

Grover

(Q: All of this effort for fish?    A: You betcha!)

PS: In case you were wondering - I did mean "jury-rigged" which suggests "improvised in an emergency," not "jerry-built" which signifies "very shoddily constructed."  :)

Ohhh...  I Love It When A Plan Comes Together !

Yes! Success!

This morning saw the pallets get placed over the fence into Billabong territory, then carefully placed on the ropes (err... actually chucked in the general direction of the ropes because I couldn't reach that far). A small amount of shuffling and poking saw them drop into place. As Daughter Number 1 would say... "Yay!"

EPS_Billabong-01.thumb.jpg.7bfbafebb027452e88b854a79b356247.jpg  EPS_Billabong-02.thumb.jpg.532b217574684aca23b2f3977104248f.jpg  EPS_Billabong-03.thumb.jpg.685e4117627981548e4c7953e0437d5b.jpg

Angling the pallets off the two ropes worked perfectly, and gives a huge amount of breathing space for the GPGs yet should keep the (expensive!) warm air above the water to keep the water warm. Well... that's the plan Stan!

And, here is the final setup with the blue pool cover in place and no spots where the water can puddle and cause major sagging and general disarray. The cover fits neatly to within a few cms of either long edge, so any rain should eventually go in the Billabong rather than stay on the cover.

Now. Where's our Brissie winter rains????

Cheers,

Grover

(Billabong temperature is sitting on 20degC and hopefully should go back up from there)

Look great Grover well done, hope the temps get up a bit for you. hope to see ya soon been to long between coffee and bickie's

Thanx @crusty76,

The temperature in the Billabong is sitting on 21degC, whilst the 'control' pond (the blow-up swimming pool) is sitting on 16degC.

Mind you the control pond has a bunch of platies and goldfish just waiting for your next visit. Over the past few months, I've been randomly scooping gold fishies as they were feeding and plunking them in the pond. Haven't got the shrimp-net thingie yet, so whatever's there is yours! Can offer you coffee (instant!) and shortbread bikkies !

Cheers,

Grover

Winter - the Depths Thereof...

Brisbane has been shivering with temperatures of 10degC   LOL

You folks in the Northern Hemisphere will laugh, but once you have acclimatised to sunny, warm, sub-tropical Brisbane any temperature under 20degC has you reaching for the woolly jumpers and Ugg boots!

BNE.thumb.jpg.0c0df25d35556e35da597040d9fa80fc.jpg

This post is to reassure you that "No News" from the Giant Pink Gouramis means that we are concentrating on getting thru Winter and out into Spring. The cover is working perfectly, the fish are still receiving bucket-loads of vegies, and the Billabong temperature is sitting stable on 21degC. Water parameters are nominal, but evaporation means that I still have to throw a 1,000 litres in now and then.

On a side note:

Total views of the GPG-related posts on QLDAF has ticked over 94,000 views - in the words of Futurama's Bender...

Sunday Under the Covers...

Armed with tasty lettuce, peas, beans, and grapes I went to get a happyhappy snap of the GPGs. No such luck... LOL

All I saw were oodles of goldfish and a lonely Oscar. Will try again after starving them for a day. Ha!

What if the goldfish are starving the poor GPG's of their food, bullying the big sooks and living up to their ravenous and aggressive nature! :o

Monday Under the Covers...

Courtesy of the interest of @TheAquaHolic001 you now have photographic evidence that the big sooks (aka GPGs) are in fact holding their own own against the marauding teeny-weeny goldfish !  LOL

Granted, the photos are somewhat crummy (i.e. lacking in depth, colour, focus, clarity, white balance, and other photographic terms).

But they are PROOF ! If it's on the Internet as a photo, it must be TRUE ! (ROFL)  :pound:

This is the 'humpy-headed' male (of which there are probably 8 or 9!),

AQ-36-61.thumb.jpg.442af3704c42f334ebef6f389daf4ed9.jpg

and at least one (1) female (out of a possible 10 or 11),

AQ-36-60.thumb.jpg.2b7aba66ea074743a227840ecc65943b.jpg

and here they are fighting off those pesky goldfish!

AQ-36-59.thumb.jpg.f90e76844c48fa858a08785921b7cdab.jpg

You should note that "G for George" the Giant Grey Gourami (GGG), who makes up the final entrant in the GPG Billabong, has not been seen since the covers went on - but I put that down to him being naturally shy with all the GPGs in the pool. He hasn't turned up in the BCF (Big Cr@p Filter), and he hasn't made a leap for freedom during the flooding of the backyard, so I assume he's still down there somewhere.

Cheers,

Grover

PS: Go the Maroons  for tomorrow night !

Under the Covers continues...

As Grover sometimes worries about wot really goes on under the covers after he leaves...

I snuck back 5 minutes later one morning and found two giant gouramis vacuuming up the odd peas and beans that were sitting on the first pool step. The water there is only 15cm deep, so the GPGs were basically lying on their sides feeding. And of course, me without the mobile phone camera - der :boom: Needless to say, they both "vamoosed" hurriedly in different directions.

Will try for pictures again this weekend.

Cheers, Grover

(tends to ignore the politics, and just puddles on with the fish)

Sunday Snoozing Under the Covers...

You'll be pleased to know the Dog & I have gone all-out in pursuit of the GPGs. Tantalising food, and under-water video have been employed.

Sadly, the first results show just the usual suspects - goldfish and a few Oscars...

AQ-36-69-040.thumb.jpg.bf3f9344ba38a3a5f9f0ce9a6cbb642d.jpg

But then, we ran around to the deep end of the Billabong - aha! Much more exciting!

AQ-36-71-040.thumb.jpg.fb1b76240bee2a6edc114ea9602a4ce9.jpg

And, the obligatory "close-up" of the star with the nuchal hump!

GPG-Eyeball-040.thumb.jpg.dc34493d6173c207c50348b639e0df13.jpgGPG-Eyeball-070.thumb.jpg.4a8cb5cdb585492d2fdaf162c8fc58d1.jpg

Yes - I had to take two (2 !) photos to get it all in (I'm sure he was eyeing off the camera to swallow it). Really bad Photoshop skills here (let's face it - zero skills), but you get the drift. :)

(Pssst! If you make your PC or laptop screen window skinny the photos stick together - one on top of the other! Ha!)

And finally, yes there's a video to watch -->

PS: @crusty76 that's "Nelson" at the 2 minute mark with his natty hole in his forehead.  No sign of any return of HITH, so he's doing fine.

Oooohh...

So many giant pink gouramis to film....

I need a "Where's Wally" approach to this - will have another video go this weekend to film just GPG tails !!    LOL

WheresGPG.thumb.jpg.494523bc7d0fde483b206bbad74684a0.jpg

Sorry @Tristan, GiGi hasn't really stood out from the crowd. Even "G for George" the grey rescue gourami courtesy of caring Aquarama staff has been camera-shy.

I do realize that half the excitement of watching GPG youtubes is to see whether or not I fell in at the end with the camera -  Ha!

And the Billabong is being taken over by goldfish, so I can't wait for Spring to come to start removing them. @crusty76 is going to end up with a pond-full of the little blighters.

The cover is still on, the food is still being thrown in, the filters get cleaned every 2-3 weeks, and the solar panels are still thumping out elec-trickery during the day to keep the pool heat pump churning out warm water to keep them toasty-warm (but NOT parboiled!).

Cheers,

Grover

(insert dodgy photo of cooked gourami here...      X      )

On a different note...

Where have all the  "Giant Pink Gouramis For Sale" gone ?

There used to be a few appearing on Gumtree and a few here on QLDAF, but lately there's just one lonely Grey down at Kemps Creek, NSW. Sadly, the Western suburbs of Synney are just a bit too far to tootle down with the giant esky and effect a GPG-rehoming.

Oh well  :(

do u want more amazon frogbit?

Ahh... thank you very much for your offer!!

But no, I think I'd be putting someone else to disadvantage who actually needs frogbit!

All during Winter the inside tank has been home to some now rather large (and fairly violent :-/ ) marbled angelfish. The one of two bits of frogbit that escaped the GPGs was thrown in, and this is what it looks like now ha !

Frogbit.thumb.jpg.77228242348ca6e97f03611844d960c9.jpg

On a regular basis I scoop some out and throw it in with the peas, beans, lettuce, grapes, and bananas - and it all magically disappears in the Billabong   LOL

So please give it to someone just starting out in Spring with an outside pond! It's a shame the PTB (Powers That Be) decreed that the The Japanese Pearl Exhibit has to give out little plastic tanks. Whatever happened to the fun of catching your very own goldfish?  I oughta open up the Billabong for kiddy-winks to come and catch the goldies for crusty76 ha ha...

(going to the EKKA at least once this year - not entering any GPGs though, unless they have a "whale" category)
