New Systems on the go

Recommended Posts

Well after quite a long time away from the fish side of the industry, its time to set up a couple of little systems to play with, Sarah likes the Wild Bettas, and is starting to accumulate a few different species, and we are now looking at some Killie Fish, Sarah has just ordered 2 species that arrive next week. For me, I will be setting up 2 tanks for some Comps, and the half a system with Sarah with some L's and cories and whatever else floats my boat.

Sarahs system will comprise of 2x 3x18x12 tanks on the bottom, they will be fry grow out tanks, the next 2 levels will be 16 of our custom made acrylic tanks 30x20x20, purely for Sarah's Betta addiction.

Then we pick up the 12 tank system off @timmy82 tomorrow, they are 3ftx20x12 I will custom split some of these tanks, both systems will run off custom built sumps.

Looking forward to getting these going.........................

peace out

HI mate

certainly are :)

Will be keen to follow. I have been wanting to set up a 4ft Rack It system from Bunnings but many people seem to experience bowing. Most people seem to stick with 3ft span.

@jc12 most people do not use the system correctly, and bow due to excessive weight, the beams have Formply on top of them and will not go anywhere and the weight of the custom acrylic tanks is minimal :)

I have had the racket system in my shed for ages with probably 3 times the weight of what will be on it now :)

This one is 1800mm also ;)

Other than using Formply, did you reinforce the beams or shelves in any way? I have seen some people use 4x2 pine under each shelf to reinforce it. It would be great if you can share how you manage to have a long span without bowing, especially with the 2 x 3ft on that shelf.

I like how clean it looks so will be following your build. Looks good! :)

I'll wait out this summer to monitor the temperature in my garage and see if I can reasonably set up a rack with a chiller without the chiller running 24/7.

Hi @jc12

no other reinforcement necessary, the formply is rigid and wont allow any movement at all, I have had one of these units set up for about 4 years with 3ft's on the bottom and middle shelf and 1ft tanks across the top and never had any movement at all that was a few years ago now, so I had no hesitation in using this system again for these tanks, and like you said its a very clean look, the black formply with the black stand looks awesome, we finshed off the edges with black paint,

i will keep you posted with pics to show you how the stand, stands up to the test :)

I try to hide things but she is a smart little cookie :)

Cleaning up the stand today we got off @timmy82, I will brace it and reinforce it alittle more and weld some legs on it,  and cleaning up the tanks (thanks for the system) nice buy. Will get it into place over the next month :) waiting on my DIamond Holesaws, I am going to drill out each 3ftx20x12 tank with 4 holes as they will be separated into 900mm compartments on some of them, putting dividers in so sarah can keep a few little fish, she has 2 species of Killifish coming

I have the 4' racks in use at the moment, only drama is I found they are about 10mm too short to fit a 4' tank, so they are wasted by only being able to fit a 3'. I have had them for years, no bowing to be had.

Working on the Stand today, grinding off some surface rust and treating it, then will weld some supports in and 6 legs on it, and the work on the LED lights, we will then paint it black in preparation for the tanks:

And while we are waiting for the rust treatment to dry, I will be making Sarah a nice little custom Timber stand to house this little beauty in
