cycindahead
I have decided that once my oscar goes to the great fishtank in the sky, ( or takes the down elevator I sometimes think), my next residents will be natives. I am not a wealthy man, so feeding costs are a factor in my choice, which rules out cods, barras and the like. What natives grow to around the 30cm mark? I am looking for a local species as well, as I may consider wild caught fish. Tony
Barramundiii
You could try an Australian bass. Most only get to 30cm in captivity. Really fun fish to keep. Unsure if you can catch them locally though?
Mealsy19
how about archer fish?
noyakfat
Most fish that grow to 30cm will still need to eat a fair amount. If feeding costs are your main concern, maybe you'd be better off with something smaller? Not sure how much moola you're talking in feeding costs, but I've fed lots of native fish in the past (and currently a Jaguar cichlid) with frozen bait such as prawns, squid and whitebait. This is quite cost effective and can be supplemented with earthworms, flies and other insects. I've had various gudgeons, a bass, yellowbelly, sooty grunter, coal grunter, banded grunter, silver perch, yellowtail catfish, sleepy cod... currently my only natives I have are little fellows. Some black banded rainbows, McCulloch's rainbows and fly-specked hardyheads. They enjoy crushed cichlid pellets, chopped prawn pieces, frozen shrimps and bloodworms and anything live that's small enough for them to eat. Feeding them doesn't cost much. Good luck with it EDIT: also had an archer fish, as suggested by Mealsy. Awesome fish and it LOOOOOVED to eat flies and live crickets, cockroaches and anything else i could raid from the garden. batters
noyakfat pretty much summed it up. just remember you can train most of your natives to eat pellets and native pellets are usually avialable from pet shops for pretty cheap. even cheaper if you pick up some from a barra farm or something. Sephiroth
You could always go Terapontidae Natives which are Grunters and some Perches, aggresive, love pellets, they are special in their own way and dont stop swimming! One of my favorite families. You could go for Bass, nice edition to any tank and they grow pretty slow so youl have them for a while . QLD fishing reg is 30cm minimum for bass and Take of 2, so youl have to head to a LFS. If you want something small and quirky you could always go Butis Butis "Crazy Fish" only gets 15cm, mabye a bit small for your kind of setup but they are one of the coolest fish iv owned! Same goes for Prinobutis Microps, this fish fascinated me the first time i saw it, in my sig theres a link to my vids if your interested in P.Microps. They get about 30cm which is amazing for this fish since they look like beasts when they get full size! Desert gobies are always good to, picked up a breeding pair tonight should have fry early Jan There my recomendations Seph
