japes
Fine sand for plants isn't a fantastic idea as it compacts onto their roots and they end up lifting themselves out so the roots can breath. I have no recommendations on a good planted substrate. I currently have 35Kg of Fine Sand in my 4x2' footprint and it's a good even 2cm coverage when it's flat, so that's a decent guideline. Rion
hey, wen i plant my tanks i use river gravel because it dosnt compact and gives roots room to grow. others may say different but this is what i have used and it seems to work well P.s if you need sand or gravel pm me
Mirage
It all depends on the plants and how oftern you want to be dosing ferts. Personally I am hooked on the ADA aqua soil but the eco complete and up aqua soil are all very good. Not mentioning names but shop around for them you can get them quite cheap these days If you are just going for the basic java ferns and anubias and java moss then you dont need substrate at all as these plants are all just attached to other things. If you start to move into the swords then you should have a substrate with a bit of nutrients in it. Your plain substrates, either gravel or sand are ok for some plants but generally only after a period of time once they have become laden with old fish waste and stuff.
