Breeding oscars

Recommended Posts

I've tried breeding oscars a few time in the past, but never with any luck. It seems its not hard to find a pair, and have them lay, but getting fertile eggs seems impossible.

I've also noticed that you never really seem to see or hear of anyone breeding oscars.

I'm just curious to know other's experiences with breeding or attempting to breed oscars. Anything anyone has to add would be greatly appreciated.

mate the biggest problem i had with oscars , when i was breeding them , was getting a male fish , 2 females will still go through the bonding / mating process that a normal pair does , but the eggs are naturally infertile and turn fungized. once you get a breeding pair , mate its pretty easy , just treat em like most large americans . hth

The only way to get a true pair of oscars is to buy a minimum of 3 young ones and grow them up. Let them sort it out remove any that are being picked on. Unfortunately as Harey said females will act like a breeding pair. I rarely trust buying a breeding pair of these guys from anyone unless I see fry.

The last time I had a go at breeding oscars I went through about 6 pairs and still couldn't get a fertile spawn. I know the whole process should be fairly easy, so why do we not see anyone breeding them? Are all the fish we have available to us infertile?

anything is possible a lot of fish coming out of asia "seem" to be infertile at the moment. There is "rumors" of them treating them but no proof. As an importable fish this is more than likely the case.

But as I said it is "rumors". I have 8 here at the moment I am going to place together to see what happens.

i have 2 pairs of breeding oscars, a red pair and albino pair

my oscars have always breed without a problem, ive had a far few

breeding pairs over the years

i found they usually need to be around the 2 year old mark before they will

breed successfully and i have hand raised them from fry

and you need a male and a female, i have seen lots of people trying to breed 2

females

ohh and i ve always feed them a wide variety of food and lots of it
