Pterophyllum Altum Display

Recommended Posts

Thought that I would create a thread in order to show and track the evolution of my P. Altum tank.

(I am unsure why the photos have uploaded at a lower quality then what they where taken at So they seem a little blurry sorry)

29/07/20 - Stage 1, Initial Setup

Aquascape was set up, inhabitants include 3 Wild Caught Rio Orinoco Pterophyllum Altum, 5 F1 Rio Atabapo Pterophyllum Altum and 9 Hemigrammus Bleheri. The aquarium was previously Blackwater which I plan to remove through water changes for a clear water system.

Added 6 more Hemigrammus Bleheri (increasing school to 15) as well as a pair of Apistogramma Agassizii ‘Tefe’. All fish go through at least 6 weeks of quarantine. These have been in quarantine for over 2 months now.

Managed to get some nice photos of the Apistogramma Agassizii ‘Tefe’ female. She definitely is the Queen or the tank, not even the male stands up to her.

Some updated tank photos. The water is clearing up nicely through water changes

I do still have a few more species that are waiting in my quarantine tanks or that I am growing out a bit larger to add to the setup in the future.

What would you stock this tank with? Let me know your thoughts/ opinions on the aquarium as well. I plan to keep this thread regularly updated, you can always see more frequent updates on my Instagram: kooky_cichlids

Elegant, simple, peaceful.  I like it.

Thanks mate,

I am really enjoying it and watch it develop.
If there is one thing P. Altum is not it is as peaceful as people think haha

The flat river rocks in the Center of the tank will also be removed, they are only there to hold the ghost wood in position while it becomes water logged

Thank you!
I am loving watching it develop! Have more species, aquatic plants and mosses to add in the future. Not only that, there will also be an emersed plant section on the driftwood tHat emerges from the tank as well as a whole other emersed section added :D

It is so enjoyable watching the apistogramma darting in and out of the plants and getting excited when you spot them. I look forward to getting more of this with more dwarf cichlids and Loricariidae species that are planned to go in.

True, I also have a few of them in my planted tank.  They still are cichlids, after all - even if the biffo is nothing like my Malawi tank.

Angels in general are cranky bastards disguised with a nice name and form.  Never had Altums - on the one day list.  Problem is the one days are getting less while the fish to keep one day list is growing.

They truely are cichlids haha. Perfectly gets displayed when I put frozen food in and one fiercely displays the area from the rest.

I know what you mean. I have recently gotten into catfish and Loricariidae and there are many I want to keep. Some obviously above others though

Some more updated photos taken approx 3.5 weeks after being setup.

Move the extra 3 Wild Caught Pterophyllum Altum, Rio Orinoco our of quarantine and into the tank, their fins came in damaged, as well as them picking on each other in quarantine but they are healing up.
