Linoleum
the usually get big fat bellies mine all have i thinki its healthy. Im not sure how to sex them but im pretty sure they are egg layers and the male will build a nest in the gravel, they have to be pretty big to breed around a foot so im not sure how succesful breeding in the aquarium will be. batters
hey champ all the native eels tails will eat and eat till they look like that its not nesecery unhealthy. you may be right and its full of eggs tho. i assume the male will build a nest to breed but i have a good book i'll look up later for you. its easy to tell sexes apart the male has a long cylinder opening and the females is a bit shorter and more triangle. its a bit hard to spot with just one but once you get a male and female you can spot the difference. definetly egg layers and they shouldnt be hard to breed given enough space. cheers mick

frinkie
agree with all the above, a few years ago when they used to be in the local creek,t. tandanus would all breed around november, they would make nests in the river bed a good foot in diameter. I know its not the same species, but i'd imagine it would be the same as fairly closely related. That dorsal spine had some nasty toxin's in it though, got done by one that was no bigger than 5cm once, whole arm went numb except for the tip of my finger which hurt like hell for a few hours. wouldn't want to think what a fully grown one could do
