alex_j_5 Posted December 9, 2009 Report Share Posted December 9, 2009 hey guys as its getting warmer again i was thinking of making a few ponds outside as im moving to a bigger house. just question on what people think about types of fish and keeping water quality n so on for the ponds. thought it would be good for fish to have a nice big area to swim n grow. so seeing what pro's n cons might be for it. thanks Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
whiteknight Posted December 9, 2009 Report Share Posted December 9, 2009 a good pond filter will do it fine , i've had everthing from swords , guppies , mollies to rainbows to b/n grow in a pond and all year round too but that depends where u live too , bigger the better same with tanks but that depends if u have kids too , just would reconmend a good cover for it at nite to keep things out and watch for birds so have plenty of places for them to hide ( also a cover helps in winter to keep some heat in ) Terry oh and all these fish i have had in a pond have bred and bred well in there Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
alex_j_5 Posted December 9, 2009 Author Report Share Posted December 9, 2009 well i heard that bristlenose have adapted to qld climates so i was wondering if i could put them in. but i wouldnt want to go and make a pond than find out the fish wont survive. i put a texas in my pond and couldnt find it in winter to take out and than i saw it the other day so it must have lasted all winter. i would like to put bristlenose in there with heaps of caves and see if they breed well n grow quick Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
whiteknight Posted December 9, 2009 Report Share Posted December 9, 2009 mate i dont know about the fancy b/n but commons will do fine in there heaps of people acctually breed there b/n in ponds they seem to breed alot better , some fish will learn to adapt well in ponds through winter and do well where some others wont , have also read stories of goldfish staying alive in ponds even when the top of the pond is frozen amazed me Terry Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

clayton31 Posted December 9, 2009 Report Share Posted December 9, 2009 mate just add a couple 300w heaters in winter ..thats wat i do i keep barras jacks gourami (gaint) togas ....elec yellows that escape as feeders all year round also had a few 30cm oscars in there...and as whiteknight said a cover for winter is great just for ova night .... i use huge bits of foam and that dose the job pretty good Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

plecosto Posted December 10, 2009 Report Share Posted December 10, 2009 mate, only have a power head in it to keep the water moving as for feeding every 2 to 3 day grow fast didnt have pump on it for 3 mouths. heeps of weed in it. cleaned it out yesterday never lost a fish yet dont feed bristlenose;s they live off the algae. raff Posted December 10, 2009 Report Share Posted December 10, 2009 anyway...so there has been some success at keeping bn in ponds. I was interested in trying, but I wasn't sure how they would survive during winter. Even though, really, it doesn't get that that cold, wouldn't it still be a little too cold for tropical fish? Or would they be able to adjust to the fluctuations in water temp during a day throughout a season. If it could work, I might have to try some. I've always wanted to try keeping bn. clayton31 Posted December 10, 2009 Report Share Posted December 10, 2009 mate if u got good media in a good filterration and heater in winter i cant see y not ...at one stage i had a few l numbers in my pond when i 1st built it but i had a heater on all year round ...so just depands on wat u wanna run on ur pond to wat u can keep i think ...(wouldnt be a good idea to keep differant types of bn in there just in case they deside to breed together ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

odog123 Posted December 10, 2009 Report Share Posted December 10, 2009 Sorry if this is a little off topic but has anyone tried the big pool's that you can get from Toyworld, Toys'r'us or Kmart. I have one at home and it is 3.5m by .90 deep and by the look of it it holds a heep of water and they often come with a little plug in filter (poor quality) but an option to add on to with a sump or something like that????? once agian sorry if this is off topic but just thought i would throw it in.
