New Breeding Rack Setup

Recommended Posts

I've just bought 4 x 4'x2'x15" and 10 x 2'x1'x15" tanks for my breeding setup when I move house in 2 weeks time.

I plan to run the 4 x 4' tanks off a single sump.

I'll build another rack for the 10 x 2' tanks and am considering running them off a second sump.

4 x 4 footers will be housing catfish and shrimp and the 10 x 2 footers will have shrimp only.Screenshot_20220202-133447_Facebook.thumb.jpg.a171987705cf5294b55f6effbd56fd42.jpgScreenshot_20220202-133442_Facebook.thumb.jpg.f3fadad66a2f6b9792ed31c2dd43db43.jpg

I'm after some input as to what people are doing these days regarding sump setups.

I don't see many with spinner spray bars any more. I also used to run a fluidised media setup as well.

Below are pics from my old IBC setup.

Very light bioload.

I would use an overhead filter (tray) on either one of the 4 foot tanks and use the very bottom 4 foot tank as pump tank. Add a sponge prefilter on the pump if you have slow or small fish in that tank. Several thick sheets of coarse sponge in the tray would provide ample bio media and be easy to clean.

If your bioload increases, you can add a second overhead filter to  another 4 foot tank.

You can use one pump to do all tanks on both stands if you don't mind having the two bottom tanks at different water level heights or have 2 pumps for 2 vertical separate systems.

Thanks for the reply, will look into the tray filter option.

I'll need to start looking at air pumps that will service that many tanks as well, all the 2' shrimp tanks will have sponge filters. Will need to find a super quiet pump... any suggestions?

I have been using the Resun LP series air pump for years with no issue.

The LP-20 for one of my racks supplied air via an equalised air circuit to 25 air outlets with excess air to bleed off. The tanks are only 30cm to 45cm tall. Taller tanks may require a bigger pump like the LP-40, LP-60 etc.
