Julio_13
Hey guys, I’m planning a breeding setup. After being out of the hobby for a couple of years, I’m coming back into it. I have a Rack that was from a warehouse I used to work in (1.5m long x 60cm deep). I’m thinking about which would be the best option, to run the tanks on a sump so there’s only 1 heater or, run sponge filters in each tank, and a heater in each tank. My plan is to have about 10-12 (2x1ft’s), and 2-4 (2x2fts). what kind of air pump would I also need? I wanted to get the tanks built, I have contacted Dennison and another tank builder on the Gold Coast, but it must be a busy time for them. I will attach photos of the rack when I am able to get it setup. Thanks for reading
Julio_13
Got a reply back from Dennison, just waiting on a quote :). I will be posting progress photos/build photos every now and again. This is the shelf dimensions I am working with. (1500mm long x 590mm wide). There is a sheet of mdf/chipboard on each shelf but I will be removing this as it will swell up with the water. Are there any suggestions on how to reinforce it?? Maybe some marine ply slats screwed inside from beam to beam, and then 15-20mm foam on top? (Let me know suggestions) My plan is to have 4 shelves. (5 tanks on 1st & 2nd shelf (roughly 2fts x 1ft) Then 2 (2ft x 2ft) on the 3rd and 4th shelf. And maybe 1 (2ft x 1ft) on shelf 3 and 4 in between the 2 big tanks. So that’s x12 (2x1ft’s) &, x4 (2x2ft’s). Stay tuned! QldMick and challenger1966
Julio_13
Bit of an update: So I came up with the exact measurements for the tanks, so that they they fit on the shelf perfectly and each have 5mm gap between so they are nice and snug but still have a little roof to move. Sorry if the image is a little blurry. **If you guys would like to donate anything to this build, that would be fantastic! Whether it’s equipment such as sponge filters, logs, or even a donation to PayPal (julioramirez_13@hotmail.com). And in return I will host competitions in the near future to win prizes such as Pleco/Guppy fry and even merchandise/gifts in which I plan to make myself. I will keep a record of those who donate, and when everything is all set up I will let everyone know. I can also be verified just to put you at ease and let you know that I’m not one of those scammers that are going around. I am on pleco groups on Facebook and Mewe also** Keeping fish has its challenges and rewards, and I would like to reward those who like to help other fish keepers. That’s what makes the fish keeping hobby fun! Julio_13
So this is the space that I will be working with, right on that far wall where the fishing rods are. I had the fun of taking everything off that rack on the left just so I could move it down 30cm! Haha the things we do to make room for fish! :). The rack/tanks will be in a perfect spot as there is a laundry sink for doing water removal/refill. And an extraction fan which I will run 24/7 to extract the humidity in the garage so that I do not get mould in there. johnbetta

How are all of your fish going? Thank you it will basically be a 5ft rack setup with 4 levels (3 shelves and a ground shelf). I plan to keep L number plecos again, and maybe some endler guppies and corydoras but we will see. I did also have a thought on keeping some Senegal Birchers in their own tank, so that should be great fun as they look nice. 1 hour ago, johnbetta said: your new set up your working on is going to look so amazing what types of fish are u going to keep or breed

Julio_13
Received the heart of the build in the mail the other day! Decided to go with the Resun LP-60. I was going to go with a different air pump (Hailea AC9720 1800Lph) but I couldn’t find spare diaphragm parts, so for an extra $20 or so I chose the LP-60 (4800Lph). Another good thing about choosing the bigger air pump is that if I want to expand one day, all I would have to do is tap into the air loop. I have some airline fittings on their way, and I’ll be drilling/tapping them into pvc piping. johnbetta and QldMick

Julio_13
Managed to setup the Stand/Rack. There will be 3 shelves and the ground level will also have tanks that will sit on foam. I left a gap behind the stand incase I need to do some maintenance at the back and or set up heater temp controllers and air pump etc. just have to find some slats to go across the shelves for added support, and then add some foam. does anyone have suggestions on where to get the foam from? I want it to be black. I was thinking Neoprene rubber foam sheets, but if anyone has a cheaper/better solution feel free to post it QldMick and johnbetta
johnbetta
u can get the foam from clark rubber in browns plains they sell diffrent sizes of sheets of it and diffrent thickness to and its cheap i may have some if u have any drama getting some happy to help u where i can mate Julio_13
Julio_13
Thanks John I decided to go with yoga mats. 10mm thick, I just have to cut some pieces of pine to go across the shelves as supports. The yoga mats I got were from Kmart, and they weren’t to soft/squishy, they were just right. I didn’t want the white look of the foam showing through the bottom of the tanks and instead of painting the bottoms black, the yoga mat was black so it worked out perfectly! I have not yet stuck the yoga mats down, I will however once I cut the supporting slats, or maybe the weight from the tanks will hold it in place. Julio_13
Update: So I’ve been busy, I needed somewhere for the Air pump to sit. I decided to build a shelf above the sink in the corner. The Air pump will sit at the back and I’ll be able to access it as I brung the rack off the wall so that I could fit behind the rack. x4 of my tanks were ready so for now they are just sitting on the shelves. I’m contemplating drilling a drain hole in each one to make water changes easier. There will be tanks that will go in between these ones, and then a row of x5 small tanks (the same size as the ones that will go between the bigger tanks) will go at the very bottom, on the ground level. And there will be be x2 more bigger tanks :) I also built a small stand out of timber stud pine that will fit x2 45cm cubed (45x45x45cm) Getting there slowly guys!! Julio_13
Hey guys, I took a little break from the big stand/rack. I had 2 of these 45cm Opti clear cube tanks, so I decided to build a simple stand out of 70x35 timber battens and paint it black. Julio_13
The tanks have arrived! Woo hoo!!! I’d like to give a shout out to Jack from Mad Aquariums (Underwood, QLD), for being the middle man in helping me to get 4 of the tanks built from a tank builder that he knows. Also I’d like to give a shout out to another fish tank builder, (Anthony Bellini) from the Gold Coast (Southport) for building the remaining tanks. *He can be found on Facebook* Over all both tank builders made good quality tanks. Anthony is cheaper but his tanks don’t have the black trim on the edges of the tanks which is more for aesthetics, but they do come with foam for under the tanks. Luckily He didn’t put the black trim on as I didn’t account for the couple of millimeter's, but if I wanted to add that on down the track then I might be able to but it would be a tight squeeze. Just to give you an idea on the pricing, from Mad Aquariums: 590x597x350mm $171.5 590x296x350mm would have cost $109.5 (Which I didn’t buy as I didn’t have the funds at the time). Delivery is $100 to the Mad Aquariums shop (for the 4 tanks that I got built) also as they don’t offer home delivery. And Anthony’s pricing is 590x597x350mm $155 590x296x350mm $80. Delivery I’m not to sure about as it depends on how many tanks you are getting built, (I went to the shop and picked my tanks up). Both tank builders also supply lids in the cost of the tanks. And the build times were the same (3-4 weeks). Next step of the build process will be to make the airline loop out of pvc so that I can put sponge filters in all of the tanks!! Super excited! Julio_13
So it’s been a while, a lot has happened it the past year, moved houses and changed jobs. I have been able to make some progress, and the rack is getting there and is nearly finished. Here are some photos of what it looks like now. Any questions, feel free to ask :) (I didn’t realise there was clear plumbing glue until after I had glued it and someone had mentioned it to me lol) *The pvc pipe water change system is removable and will be used to drain and fill up the tanks. msc0433 and QldMick
Julio_13
I have painted the timber black. I had to make something to hold the inkbird temperature controllers. MFF, QldMick and johnbetta
