cycindahead
whilst on a canoeing trip down the brissy creek, some fellows were cast netting for local fish to sell as pets. due to the possibility of diseases I would not think of selling any, but maybe catching some for my own tank. Is it cruel or illegal to do so? I worry about the stress on a wild caught fish in captivity. Tony
batters
its not cruel, most wild fish adapt well to the right tank. it is of course illigal to sell them unless you have a lisence for the particluar species. also you can only use cast nets it saltwater. whiteknight
This is a hard one as where did most fish start from ? To catch fish from the wild to make a profit isnt the right thing to do , or to catch fish to use as feeders , the only time i will catch fish from ponds/creeks out here is when they are drying up so the fish will end up dying anyway these fish do adapt well to a home aquarium ( if the tank will suit there needs ) , but as was said i am sure it is illegal to do , shame to walk into a lfs and seeing firetail gudgeons selling as feeders , the other piont is parasites getting into the tanks u may have , just my opinion Terry
damo83
What fish are you talking about here?? Gudgeons, rainbows, etc or bass, perch, catfish.... If there is a size limit on the fish in question then its illegal to take anything under that size regardless of whether you kill it or not... But that aside I don't think its right anyway... especially if they're selling them off. Let's face it natives are not that expensive to buy so why help to further destroy our waterways to save or make a few $$'s.
noyakfat
the DPI website www.dpi.qld.gov.au has a link to fishing rules and regulations. You can see a list of approved equipment for catching fish. Cast nets are DEFINITELY illegal in Qld freshwater. There is also a list of size limits and "in posession" limits for particular species. As for selling them, I don't know about the legality of it. Morally (PERSONALLY) I am against the sale of native species caught in the wild, but not introduced species (unless noxious), provided it is done on an opportunistic basis only, where they are only being TAKEN from the wild and never returned to the water. batters
like i said you cant sell them unless you have a lisence. as far as i know you cannot apply for a liscence anymore you have to buy one off someone who already has one. some species such as common blue-eyes, spangled perch etc. and many others can easily supply the australian aquarium trade from wild stocks. remember you can always dob someone in if you see them breaking the law. obviously thats not for kids taking home one undersized fish but more for those that know thier breaking the law.
