shotzz
Arvo everyone, First hello, as I'm new to the forum! I'm just in the process of setting up a 4ft tank and my girlfriend and I are looking at stocking it with assorted Peacock Cichlids plus a few others (we are not sure of these yet, apart from we want some electric yellows) - can anyone reccomend some good combinations to start with? Thanks heaps oh and Merry Xmas!
Goat
Hey mate welcome to the forum. My favourite Peacocks (Aulonocara) are Aulonocara jacobfreibergi (Eureka Red Peacock), Aulonocara kandeense (Blue Orchid Peacock), Aulonocara Maylandi (Sulfur Crest Peacock) and Aulonocara stuartgranti (Ngara) (Flametail Peacock). If you want to keep a variety in a 4ft i suggest you keep only males and stock heavily to reduce aggression. Cheers Goat

dave
If you are thinking of breeding the Peacocks i would advise against having more than one strain in the same tank as these guys will breed with any available female (not fussy at all, not a bad way to be ) and you may end up with hybrids as offspring, ratio of about 1 male to 4 females usually works out well. Good Luck PS My favourites are Ngara flametails. Dave
shotzz
Thanks for your replies everyone! Cichlidae - what sort of prices are we looking at as I am very keen!
Goat
Cichlidae what exactly do you mean by BLUE peacocks? if they are what i think they are which is a hybrid, I'd advise against getting them and the OB peacocks shotzz. Getting pure strains is far more satisfying and doesnt encourage the further polution of the peacock gene pool.

As are firefish peacocks, pretty but a hybrid all the same. Dave
Cichlidae
Funny I always thought Aulonocara Nyassae were a pure strain. silly me. Most of my fish are display fish and I also would recommend either a breeding colony of 1 species or all males of different species, the all male solution generally gives excellent colour in your display. I flatly refuse to enter the Hybrid/Pure arguement. If you want a tank full of colour go for it I say. Just get the right advice and avoid creating new hybrids. My fish prices range from $6-$10 and the fish are of full colour and good size. I strongly encourage keeping pure strains pure, but see no issue with the hybrids already created. Its all about your experience with your fish, don't be swayed by others opinions and enjoy the experience that you have it's all yours. Have a great christmas! Cichlidae. Goat
So why not say Aulonocara Nyassae in the first place Also Aulonocara Nyassae is one strain of many Stuartgranti peacocks all of which colours can range from blue to yellow to red, thus nicknaming it a 'Blue peacock' could confuse a person into thinking it could be one of many types of peacock. The term 'Blue peacock' is generally reffered to as a hybrid, now dont get me wrong there are names like 'Blue Neon Peacock' which is a Aulonocara stuartgranti (Hai Reef) and is quite a lovely looking fish (had one myself). I wont get into the hybrid/cross debate either all i will say is that hybrids can be attempted to be reverted back to its original strain thus destroying a pure strain, which is where alot of the concern comes from. Anyways Shotzz if you're looking for the best behaviour I'd suggest 1m and 4f of one type and if you're looking for colour overcrowd (remember plenty of filtration) heaps of male only, pure strain peacocks for best effect in my opinion. Cichlidae
love your opinion next time you feel the need to jam it down someones throat just become a jehova wittness, it is an acceptable way to behave in their circles. I didnt need another opinionated reply from you. so again I leave on a polite note. Merry christmas to all and may your fish bring you great pleasure over the holidays and through many a new year! Goat
I wasnt giving you an opinion i was giving shotzz my opinion on what he should keep. I was giving you factual evidence that is represented by Ad Konings, or do you know better than the worlds best author on african cichlids? Mate i'm just trying to help a new fella understand about these beautiful fish. I find it bizarre that you're getting a bit edgy because i pulled you up on referencing your peacocks, which i hope in turn has helped reduce confusion Merry Christmas to you too, have a good holidays. Cichlidae
I choose not to claim purity of strains bought in australia due to chronic over and in breeding genepool dilution and various other factors caused by various import restrictions etc. etc. I am merely a guy who has a knack for fish, not an expert, not a guru just a bloke. I only offer for sale what I have available suiting a display tank of male peacocks. I am more than able to match references, factual evidence and Blah Blah Blah but am sure some one new to keeping cichlids has enough knowledge to gain and decisions to make that these endless lists of scientific names can cloud the artistic development in establishment of tank decor enthusiasm and obscure the natural learning curve we all take. Yes I do have Hybrids, Yes I do have pure strains and yes at any request I am happy to provide anyone with scientific and factual information regarding the species I keep. Oh and sorry about the sarcasm, Chef by trade. it just comes out. oops. was a good call though! Have a good one yourself I will be cleaning tanks for christmas! Great Display Fish $6-$10 Hybrid and pure strain available. Merry christmas to all and a fish fliied new year. Cichlidae

Mate this is a "forum" where people are encouraged to express their views and opinions, if your head is that far up your arse don't bother posting, we are only here to help people whom ask for advice so maybe you should continue making tarts or whatever it is that you chefs do and stop criticising people who are trying to help others on this forum. Peter
Hi Shotzz http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/p ... corner.php contains a few good articles to read up on about keeping various Peacocks etc. You are very lucky to also have a girlfriend who supports your aquarium hobby (soon to be addiction) - this comes in handy when purchasing more tanks and fish down the track for her birthday, anniversary of first date and so on. You are also very fortunate to have a few passionate hobbyists contribute to your thread with their own personal thoughts and advice, and all raise valid points to consider (albeit a little over zealous in their replies it seems - the forum does really value chefs and Jehova Witnesses ). I'm sure any further posts will be of a much more friendly tone and fit in with the community orientated nature/spirit of the forum.
