Shining a torch on breeding bristlenose

Recommended Posts

I think twice today I have read someone mention that you shouldn't shine a torch on the eggs of a breeding bristlenose.

Stupid question, but can I ask why not?

My pair of bristlenose has just recently laid a batch of eggs so I don't really want to lose them by my curiosity.

Any insight or an explanation is greatly appreciated.

Many of the cave spawning fish eggs are photo-sensitive. In some cases light will stop cell development and hatching needs to be done in dark. (Humphead cichlids for example). B/N eggs seem to hatch in light though so this advice was probably just to stop you frightening broodfish. They need to feel secure to spawn.
